Belt Pulley seal

Can someone give me some help Is there a seal behind the belt pulley i see where the bolts are that hold the belt pulley in place is it a big deal pulling that plate off to put in seal and also is there a felt washer there to. Thanks for any help also Merry Christmas from KY

It would help if you let us know what model of tractor you are asking about. The process is different for a letter series Farmall tractor versus a pre 1939 F-series.

It sounds like you have an H or an M. Replacing the seal would be the same deal for both. To replace the seal, you remove the 4 bolts in the flange that holds the shaft/bearing/gear assembly in the belt pulley gear box. When the bolts are out, the shaft, flange, bearings, and pulley drive gear will slide out as a unit. There is no drain on the pulley housing, so be prepared for any oil in there to come out when you slide the flange out. It's probably no more than a quart. Once the assembly is out, you will need a shop press and a bearing splitter to remove the drive gear and two bearings(and maybe a spacer or two). Then you can get the flange and seal off so you can replace the seal. The parts diagram does show a felt seal and a couple of snap rings which are bearing retainers and have to be removed. Be aware that the gear lash is set by shims between the flange and the pulley housing. There is not a gasket there, just the shims. Make sure you put the shims back like you found them. Clean the shims very well, as they need to be clean to avoid leaks. Since there is not a gasket, it's common to have a little seapage. I think later tractors may have an O ring seal to seal off the shims and prevent oil seepage. If you are experienced at this, you might be able to do it without the shop press, but that is the proper and easiest way to get things apart and back together.
