706 bleeding the hyd. system

I just bought a 706 thats sat for several years. I changed all the fluids and seem to have air in the hyd. The steering is now not wanting to work. I'm thinking I need to bleed the system and get the air out. I'm still looking for a book on the 706 so any help would be nice, Thanks Terry

Just a guess but you probably don't have brakes & the TA won't shift either. If it is limited to the steering, bleed the lines on the steering cyl. Otherwise there is an o-ring that requires splitting the tractor between the speed transmission and the rear end on the suction tube. Before jumping to this change the hyd. filter and clean the suction screen for the mcv pump. See if the oil is foamy, which would indicate a suction line leak.

If I may make a suggestion, Over fill the case by about 3-5 gallons. I do it when ever I change oil in mt 1206 and it will prime right off the bat. I tried just filling it to the recommended level and no joy. Over filled it and had pressure in about 30 seconds. Merry Christmas. Larry

Take your air compressor's blow gun and a rag, and pressurize the rear end through the fill tube on the deck, and turn the steering wheel.

It could be as simple as the system losing prime. If it happens again you've got an air leak in there somewhere.

I had that problem once when I changed my hydraulic filter. IH mechanic told me to remove a plug. This plug is roughly 15 inches below and 27 inches forward of where the clutch pedal pivots. It screws out from the bottom like a drain plug. Mine takes a 7/8 wrench. After removing the plug, start the tractor. I think air and probably hydraulic fluid should come out. Make sure nobody is standing nearby. Hope this works if you haven't got it fixed yet.
