I live in Central Illinois. We have a lot of plow days. Does the W9 make a good plow tractor & how does the gearing compare to a "M" or Super "M" Would it handle 4- 14 if it was big bore. Cooling & hydraulic' ?? I haven't seen one plowing around here. Earl

The W9 is a 335 cubic inch engine. Compared to the 248 cubic inches of a Farmall M, I would guess that a 4-14s plow would be right in the ball park.

Like Gene said, they were a drawbar tractor right from the start. Most guys here in SE WI pulled 4 bottoms.

I don't want to start a fight with Rusty, but I think they are actually 338 and 350 for the 4.5" engines.

The standard W-9 engine was 334.5 cubic inches, 4.4 bore x 5.5 stroke, and was commonly referred to as 335. The 350 cubic inch was the Super WD-9 diesel which was 4.5 bore x 5.5 stroke. There was no 350 cubic inch gas W-9 as original although you could easily upgrade it to 4.5 bore. The W-9 is one tough tractor with plenty of torque for heavy soil plowing.

Is the W9 a good plowing tractor?

Was the last Pope Polish? Does a bear drop deuces in the woods?

The W9 was made to pull a plow first and foremost.

One more thing one has been used for... at work we had a W-9 that we pulled behind combines on a test track when testing hydrostatic transmissions. Put in gear (don't recall which gear) pulled the plug wires off, put a gate valve on the exhaust and pinched it down to create a load. Waste of a good W-9, but it worked.

I only got to use a W-9 for just a few hours plowing and disking, but I honesly felt that even though it was bigger and heavier than the W-6 I had spent many, many, hours on, being a tractor on our farm, the W-9 handled a little easier because of it's bigger front wheels and wider front and rear tread and it rode a lot easier too. The brakes, clutch, and shifting took a little more effort though. The W-6 was "souped up" to over 50 horsepower and pulled it's 3-16 in. plow pretty easily while the W-9 worked pretty hard pulling it's 4-14's....but actually it probably didn't have much, if any, more power than the W-6 had.

How many do you have? Do you know how to plow? I don't have one and was wanting some comparison to a M & Super M mainly the gearing, hydraulics. I really don't care about the POPE or the BEARS.

Most W(D)-9s were upgraded/came with live hyd. It was standard equipment WAY earlier on the 9s than on all the other tractors from what I have seen. Then there was an improvement package that most were upgraded with.
If the one your looking at doesn't have live power I just bought a parts engine that has the live pump on it.
