The grill has been repainted or changed at least once in its life. The decals are the type dealers put on a tractor that had been on the lot for a while and the decals faded OR it was repainted and those decals used. (I think my second theory is right.) BUT still, its a great representation of either. I would leave it AS IS!!

from what i can tell this thing has the original everything, except starter button and battery cables, the the parts that are most amazing to me is the muffler and the seat, not to mention the shifter knob, the shifter is tight as a drum, feels better than new. she is for sale, was going to make a puller out of it but would not dream of cutting this one up. thanks for looking.

Looks like it hasn't been butchered, but I wouldn't pay much of a premium for it. I think I know the answer, but did the clutch pedal have much side to side movement?

that m isnt original doesnt have original muffler doesnt have silver seat cushion been repainted before
its just a average m
come to iowa here you can get em for 1000-1200 max all day like yours

every one is entitled to their own opinion, but you better look and that muffler and that seat again.

your an idiot it has a ih muffler but that isnt the one it came with new and the seat is not original neither grab a m archive book and it will prove me right people should know what they are talking about before making themselves look like idiots

I'm sorry Mack but i don't think it's near as original as you would like. The seat is a reproduction along with the shift knob. The decals are vinyl and put on 20-30 years ago. I had one like that with new tires and very good mechanically I sold for $2500 a couple years ago.

(quoted from post at 21:26:39 12/21/11) ok sorry you are a genius

He is correct, but was pretty rude about it. They NEVER came with plastic seats like that. They were always cloth/canvas type seats. Guy Fay's "Originality Guide Farmall Letter Series Tractors" may provide some insight as well as the parts manual. If you don't have that one you better put it on your Christmas list. It is an awesome guide to what these tractors should/might have looked like coming out of the plant.

(quoted from post at 22:27:12 12/21/11) Tom your right it has been repainted. Look at fan belt its painted.

Good eye! I missed that one.

Howard, that is a pretty good price for a plain jane M!

Here is another pic. This is a tractor I bought in the late 90s. It had been restored probably 15 years before and was stored outside.

Hard to see in the picture if the bottom metal is missing from the grill or just the insert. Romote control valve is all I see to add value.
With no wheel weights or a good battery box and average looking tires. $1000 to $1350 local, although I have bought better looking for less than that. Does appear to have a original manifold still on it.

Def not original been repainted at dealership. Our friends family owned 3 ih dealerships in pa anytime a tractor came in for extensive repairs they would paint them and put on new decals. The fact is the vinyl seat is later then what would have been on a m, the paint on the belt, coil, and wires is a tell tale sign of repaint.and does not have original wiring harness. Still a nice peice though.

It's actually a below average tractor. May need carb rebuild, doesn't have Donaldson cleaner, needs muffler, needs grill inset ($85) Needs battery box, cables. That would be about $400 to geet it up to average. Fluids might be bad that's anither $100

Saw and M last fall at out show in Republic MO. A young mans grandpa had passed and left it to him. It was an M with a wide front The paint was the best I had ever seen. Orig seat and tires but it did have a tool box bolted to the frame rail and the orig tool box on the light bar. I dont think it had ever spent a night outside. Even the draw bar hole was perfect round. Wish I had taken a photo. There was a crowd around it all day. The one in your photos is nice but you can find them like that about any time.

It's a nice tractor, if I wanted one to restore I would be willing to pay $1500 or so, then put another $4000 into it. But, there is nothing special about it. Might be able to sell it restored for $2500 or so.

I have that same upholstered seat on my SM ,pretty sure it was not original though , it was purchased sometime in the seventies from the local dealer if memory is correct. Nice tractor . I like it too when the shifter and gears feel tight, to me, that says low hours and light use.

Those aren"t original tires. That model Goodrich was available in the late 50s; a more inexpensive BFG. The original Goodrich was the BFG Silvertone - wider lugs, quite a bit different looking around the sidewall & had one more bar around the perimeter.

I am with you on this one.

Not seeing it in person.(Assuming it IS running good.) If it was close enough to me to come get it,I would give $1500.00 for it.

Like I said before,If it was a SMTA,SMTAD,High Crop,ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT 1939 M,first of,or last of a serial #,ALL original equipment m,ANY year,or an "odd optioned" tractor,Those will bring money.THAT is what makes a "collector tractor".

The value of these are the rarity of them. I think there were roughly about 1/4 of a millon Ms made.I am thinking there were over 400,000 Hs made? (Second biggest seller, behind the 8N fords.) Plenty of them out there, but the RARE models will drag in the "big bucks".

One in similar condition sold at an auction near here about a year or so ago. Engine sounded good, went for about $1500. WD-40 was the high $$$ [u:878e285a68]old[/u:878e285a68] tractor there.
