timing sweey spot on Regular

I have been having on and off trouble hand starting my Regular, even with good spark and fuel system sorted out. I am wondering if my timing is a little off. I have the manual, and have checked it that way. I am thinking of hooking up a battery to use an actual timing light on it and expierimenting a little. Is the so called "sweet spot" different from the factory setting? I have heard the old timers say they will start in one crank when all is "just right".... Mine wont, takes about 6-12 cranks, or 15-20 feet if I am pulling it. I know my Mag is working correctly and points are good, carb and compression good. It runs GREAT when running, just tough to hand start sometimes.

I don't know a lot about magnetos, but it kinda sounds like maybe the impulse is not tripping to the advanced position for starting?

Mike, The mag should click at TDC Full advance!
The pin that you engauge in your crank should be horizontal at TDC. Crank it and listen for the click is it at TDC? That is a starting spot with your timing. The float in the carb can be a real problem if it is not floating good. I have had no luck with the cork floats and the gas we use these days. I have changed most of mine over to brass floats. If it is getting to much gas it will flood easy. I have one right now that is to lean and I have to choke it 2 times than it starts. I would rather that than flooding.
