My brother in law told me that the tractor jumps out of 5th gear every once in a while....all the other gears are fine, no problems at all.....any ideas what is causing it and what it takes to fix?

thanks

Could be any of a bunch of things.

People tend to try to shift from 4th to 5th on the fly, and GRIND the gears horribly. So, it could be the slider for 5th gear is worn.

Could be bearings too. 5th is direct drive through the transmission to the differential and it puts a lot of stress on the transmission main shaft. If there's play in the bearings holding that shaft, it could walk out of gear.

Most likely it's the 4th/5th slider gear. The internal teeth that couple up to the differential drive shaft are probably worn to a nub from grinding the gears when shifting 4th to 5th. It could also be worn bearings on the transmission input shaft or the pilot bearing what holds the front of the differential drive shaft. In 5th gear the top shaft is coupled together so that it's direct drive from the engine straight through to the differential. Gears 1 through 4 drive from the bottom shaft of the transmission. To find out for sure what is wrong, you're going to need to pull the top off the transmission.

My gear was worn out and my spring that held the ball into the shift detent was rusted in half on my H. Two more wern't that far from junk. They all got replaced. I would have used stainless springs if I was smarter.
