f20 Identfication

Looked at 5 F20/Regulars today, and have a question on one of them. The one tractor has a 4 speed tranny, and smooth axles(no foot stop),and a side draft carb with exhaust going up. also has a after market steering gear box(closed gear). I would like to know if it is a f20 or a Regular? no tag number, and to dark to see frame numbers. Other 4 are two f20's, two regulars.
Thanks, Kevin

It sounds like a Regular but the 4 speed transmission has me wondering. But for whatever reason it may have been switched. I'm pretty sure an F20 transmission would bolt up to a Regular axle. I've seen lots of hybrids. In the old days something would break and they would fix it with whatever parts they had at hand. Lots of mix and match between F20s and Regular. I'd be interested in seeing pics of the aftermarket steering gear. I have one on a Regular now and have only seen one other.

I thought i read something where they made like 300 f20 with smooth axles to use up parts. I thought it was in red power magazine maybe three or four years ago. I have one as
so as you described. Also had elecric starter added. I realize you never really know whats been changed over years.

I"d say a mix of both f-20 engine and trans in a regular frame with aftermarket gear cover as you mentioned and no footstops

It could very well be an F-20. In 1934 IH built F-20's with a Regular rear housing. They had TA for a serial number prefix instead of FA. I have one and it has the four speed trans, duckbill steering, everything an F-20 should have, but with the no step rear axle housing. The theory I have heard is that they wanted to use up some leftover parts. BT

I don't have pics. I went there to look at buying the regular and he told me he would only sell all 5 as a package. I shouldn't be buying all five, but might have too. I will go back later and take some pics. I think the one in question is a factory tractor other than the steering gear box, so it must be a early f20.
Thanks, Kevin

I find the manifold with the Ensign carb mount, yet top exhaust pipe to be very interesting. I have seen regular's with the F-20 manifold on them and a top exhaust, but that is explainable.

Any change of pictures on the unusual Regular?

Heisler made an upright manifold for use on a regular when it had a mounted picker or loader on it. ive got a couple here from tractors parted out. not real common, but not real rare either

OldF20, good info, as I was not aware of that. I learn something new all the time from here.

Boy, I would love to see a picture of one if you have it handy......
