Got this farmall A running took it up the road for a ride now it boiled the coolent all the way home. It has no water pump radiator was full. fan belt is new and tight.Any ideas ?? thanks!

Lightly touch the bottom hose to see if it's hot.
If it isn't hot you probably have the tubes blocked in your radiator. It may need to be rodded out. Hal

Well if over full it will do that type of thing. Or you may have a cooling system that is clogged up from years of rust and lime etc. If it was me I would drain the system then fill with vinegar and run it let it cool and then back flush it with a garden hose and give it another try

Don't know if it is true but I heard once you should mix your antifreeze and water before filling an A (no water pump)

Old indicates it might be over full. I agree. The coolant should be covering the tubes in the top tank, by about 3/4 inch. Full is bad. There is nop expansion tank, so the expanding water must go out the top if over full. Jim

Your problem is the block is plugged where the coolant comes down by the sleeves and therefore the coolant cant cicculate as it supposed to do. Best fix is remove the radiator then you can remove the bottom outlet. mNow with compressed air and some stiff wire you can clean the block out. those holes are about the size of a nickel but using air and water pressure you can get them cleared. Using a hose with plenty of pressure and flow forcing water in thru that botto9m outlet you can backflush and get the crud out. You will be surprised at the junk you will find.

Ive never had a problem with the two mixing you run the tractor nd get it warm and by then the coolant has moved thru the system.

Only time that is true is if all your going to do is drain and fill the cooling system and then not start the engine so as to get the coolant flowing so yes if you do not run the engine no the anti-freeze will not mix up as well so you might need to premix it

Pete, what makes you think that it is over heating? These old thermosyphon systems will betch and gurgle and if the rad is too full, will pee all over the place out the overflow tube when up to operating temp.

Like has been posted, get her up to temp, and see if the lower rad hose is just warm, HOT, or cold. It should be just warm to the touch. Top of the rad should be to hot to hold your hand on, and the bottom of the rad should be warm, not cold.

I am not saying that she's isn't overheating, but let's be sure before you go doing alot of different things........

I will give it a try tomorrow, but It was boiling steam. coolent all over. thanks All I'll let you know what I find.

OUT SIDE TEMP was 2 this am good time to work in cellar. I took rad off ran water down top rad pipe on motor ran clean at bottom motor. ran water in and out of rad. all cleanI will put it back tomorrow
