i WAS LOOKIN AT A 424 INTERNATIONAL TRACTOR THIS MORNIN FOR SALE BUT HE COULDN'T GET IT STARTED.
ITS DIESEL AND FUEL IS GETTIN INTO THE INJECTOR PUMP BUT NOTHIN COMING OUT OF THE INJECTION PUMP . DOES THAT MEAN IT NEEDS A NEW INJECTOR PUMP? THE GUY SAID ITS DONE THAT BEFORE BUT HIS BROTHER CAME OVER AND GOT IT GOING. BUT IT CURRENTLY DOES NOT RUN . ANY IDEAS OF THE PROBLEM? DO YOU THINK IT NEEDS A INJECTION PUMP? THANKS ANTHONY

Has tractor not run for awhile, may have internal parts sticking or broken. Call 574 893 4172 evenings if you have any questions.

Try, see if this is any help.

It seems as though that tractor model did not have a lift pump, in the line from the tank, to the injector pump.
Once you have fuel from the tank to the injector pump there are usually two bleed screws, upper and lower,on the injector pump. These need air free fuel flowing from them, lower first, close bleed screw, then upper, close bleed screw.
Loosen the injector feed pipe at #1 injector and attempt to start the engine with the starter.
When all the air is pumped out of the injector line, the tractor should start-on #1 at first, then all four.

If many attempts have been made to start , before doing the above, I have found it sometimes needs all the injectors removed, the engine spun over , just to clear the amassed fuel/guck. With injectors replaced and the lines bled, it usually starts right away.
This is how I start my relatives 434,I think it is basically the same as yours.

It's a good tractor model. Diesel uses the British BD-154. Injection pump is a CAV rotary. Most likely the metering valve is stuck shut. They do that when they've sat for a long time. Half-hour fix if that IS the problem.

I have several similar tractors with basically the same engine and drivetrain. B-275, B-414, 424 and 3414. All have fuel pumps (gas or diesel).

Thanks for the information.
I did a search for Cav and found the manual on line in seconds! I did not know the name of it before.
I have 400 feet of horse fence to put in before the ground freezes and I'm running out of time.
Thanks again.

I also have a question. We just bought a 424 Deisel and it runs great.......when you get it started! You have to hold down on the starter button and allow the engine to turn over for 60-90 seconds before it starts. The whole time it turns over it doesn't even hit....if it does it is very little. Once it hits, it spits and sputter just a little bit and starts up. WHile running it runs Perfect like a new tractor would until you shut the fuel off.

Right now the tractor is stripped down and has just been re-painted. We are about to change the filters and fluids, so I'd like to fix the starting problem. ANY SUGGESTIONS AS TO WHAT IS WRONG!?!???

Hi, you must use the glow plugs to start the BD-
154 British Diesel for the first start of the
day.For the first start of the day, in warmer
climates it will start by just cranking the engine
for a a period of time but not good for the
starter. If engine and injection pump are working
properly, for the fist start of the day the glow
plugs must be used but after engine has warmed up
it should start without glow plugs.
Note: The glow plugs are wired in series and if
one burns out they all stop working.
There should be a glow plug push button and glow
plug meter on the dash.

Hope this helps

JimB2,

Please email or call me at [email protected] or 205-368-5339.

While I have the tractor torn apart, I want to fix it right. All of the wiring seems to be original and in good condition. It doesn't look like it was ever tampered with....with the exception of the key switch that someone has jumped (wired the wires together). I had an original key and it turns smoothly, so hopefully that is all that it needed (a key). The push button and the thing on the left side (with holes in it) is all there and intact, so I would presume it would work. However I did notice that the glow plug closest to the radiator is "broken" away from the metal wires that it is connected to.

I need some assistance when it comes to this since I'm a gas type trac tor guy THANKS

I apologize to the original poster of this thread for not meaning to "hijack" this thread. I am going to start one for myself and hopefully this guy here will get his issue resolved as well.

As for my problems with my 424 and the glow plugs, please see my new thread titled "IH 424 Diesel Glow Plug Problems".

THANKS GUYS!!
