starting farmall M

I could use some help with my 47 Farmall M. It has always been notoriously hard to start. I had it switched to twelve volt this summer, after which it ran well, charged, and started easily. I was hoping to use it to plow snow this winter, since it is the only tractor that I have a plow for. The day of our first snow-- it wouldn't start. The starter switch was blown-- replaced that. It now turns over, starts for a second, and dies. Seems like fuel to me-- A friend suggested that I could have ice in the carb. I tried pouring hot water over the carb. No change. Could the float be stuck? It also has an in-line fuel filter. It hasn't been very cold yet-- above freezing today-- but I'm looking at a lot of shoveling if I can't puzzle this out sometime between chores--

If by chance you have that much water in the carb, you are going to have to drain it.The water will not allow gas to be pulled up through the venturi and jet. I would also check in to a rebuild kit for the carb if you have never had it apart. Some people will shy away from it but using laquer thinner is the BEST carb cleaner there is.

Sounds like you put the coil switch wire on the wrong side of the starter switch. You may have it on the starter side of the switch, needs to be on the battery side of the starter switch.

I think John M has it right. Try "hot" wiring the coil to battery and see if it will run, then you will know if it's ignition or fuel problem.

First thing to do is get rid of the in line filter they cause more problem then they fix. If you have the sediment bowl and the screen in it you have all the filter you will ever need.
Next check for a good blue/white spark that will jump a 1/4 inch gap. Next pull the drain plug out of the bottom of the carb and make sure you have a good steady flow of gas. Let it flow for a few minutes and catch it so as to make sure it doesn't have water or dirt in it. If you have good spark and good flow try a hot wire to see if you maybe have a switch going bad or a wiring problem.

Yup-- I feel like a dope but I had that wire on the wrong side of the starter switch-- pretty dumb mistake but now my day is going much better-- tractor is running again. Thanks for the help.
