986 clutch/input shaft

Just thought I would share what I learned about my clutch issue. Split the tractor again (third time) for the clutch release issue and found that the clutch disc was driving on the area just behind the original wear pattern. This caused a ramp effect in turn, wedging the disc against the flywheel enough to drive the tractor in 1st low or reverse with the pedal down. No amount of adjusting anything helped. Either a new TA or get creative with a grinder !!

If I remember That was my guess. Sometimes we get lucky. Do as Owen indicates, it will be fine! It will at least wear in the same location. I would put a lite coat of moly spray on it to limit further wear (very lite!!) Jim

When we replaced the clutch in my 766, we replaced the IPTO drive gear also. When we slid the clutch disc on my old one, it would hang up at the wear line, put it on the new one and it slip a lot further. You might check that out and see. We used HY-Cap parts so you could call them and ask.

Hy-Cap page for 986 showing the parts:

We machined the disc hub back and ground the ramp off of the splines with a burr bit. Got it back together and it shifts like a dream!!!! Thanks to all for responding.
