Farmall M PTO question?

I have a lever on the left side of the tractor that is supposed to disengage the clutch so the PTO can still spin? I am confused as to how this works, and its use, can anyone explain it to me?

Simply put it is a differential disconnect. It allows one pinion shaft to spin free W/O driving the rear wheel. The trans is still in gear, and the primary clutch still drives the PTO. Jim

Jim,I have always wondered about these M&W hand clutches.

Is it safe to dismount the tractor with the transmission in gear and the M&W clutch disengaged??? Wht kind of a chance would this thing have of "self engaging"????(I dont know how its made???)

I believe all equipment should be in neutral when dismounted from. Though unlikely to suffer random engagement, it is not a good idea. The reason some get off while the PTO is turned on is to provide Darwin with AMMO. I have had clutch systems fail and drive while disengaged. I have had pilot bearings seize and jerk a car into the alley. Safe is assurance that When ever possible, at least 2 systems prevent action from happening randomly. Jim

I kind of wonder how many people have these installed on their tractors and DO get on and off them when the M&W is the ONLY thing disengaged??? Kinda scares me.

It seems like it would be alot like watching how some folks drive a John Deere A with a handclutch.(You "detent" the handlever"IN" to engage the clutch and when it is NOT detented, clutch disengaged.)

They climb on and off with just the clutch disengaged. It is a "false sense" of having the transmission in neutral!

Could you even imagine accidently "bumping" that handle and already have had that transmission in 4th gear????
