1066 or 1086

I am looking for a +100 hp. tractor and was wondering which would be better the 1066 or 1086 and was there any problems to look for when buying either.
Thank you,
Charlie

Both were great tractors and i have both, if your looking for a tractor with a cab go with the 1086, the 66 series cabs were awful.
Only downfall on the 86 series was the crude shifting, other then that a great overall tractor. Good luck.

If cab is involved the 66 series had a very poor cab.The 86 is much better and quiet but people dont like the door and controls that are on left hand side.I recently sold a mint 986 with 4100 hours and when we put it on dyno it pulled 109 H.P.and was going to be mostly a PTO or feedwagon tractor. They are one of the best buys as they usually bring around 10K.If open station or pulling the 56/66 series have plenty of power available with little expense and are to me really sharp in their design.

Nephews have a 1086 & like it a lot. Air condtioning is nice, but theirs had a leak somewhere---over a thousand to find the leak & fix it.
We've got a 1066, & it has been a good tractor. Like every one else, the cabs are terrible on the 66 series. Very good for junk.

If you just want simple reliable power that you can do minor work on yourself, an open station 1066 can't be beat. Just get a good set of ear muffs, a big hat, and some sunscreen.

One big downside to the 86 series is the cab makes all the control linkages more complex, and difficult to get to. It's relatively out in the open on a 66 series.

Frankly, I LIKE the left-handed shifters on the 86 series. That may be because I'm left-handed.

Charlie, I will second with mkirsch below on the 1066 open station. Just about a bullet proof tractor, IMO.
Just remember that engine Does Not Like to do light work (ie idle to 1/2 throttle) for extended work period. They tend to start slobbering oil out the exhaust. If and when it happens, just hook up to a heavy tillage plow and have her pulling at full throttle for a half a day and all will be well. They just don't like light duty they really do prefer to be wrung out, Balls to the wall, screaming at the top of their lungs.
They are not a great chore tractor in that reguard.
The 1066 open station is my pick. Just watch your idle time.

John A.

Agreed.

The 86 series cab is twice the cab the 66 series had. The smaller 86 series (8, 9, 10,) tractors in good shape also bring a premium - especially the 886. To keep the "nice" things about an 86 series working (AC/Seat/stereo etc..) plan on spending some money. The newest ones are now 30 years old and have been through a lot.

An open station 66 series can be purchased very cheap (compared to an "equal" cabbed 86 series) while getting a rock solid tractor. As mentioned above they are easier to work on and if you don't need the cab it would be the way to go.

That's funny. Both of ours spent a couple winters on the TMR and never slobbered. With the 7, 6-cylinder IH diesels we had, the 786 was the only one I ever saw slobber, after dad walked away from it and left it at a dead idle for an hour on a cold day.

I haven"t had any more trouble with the shift linkage on my 1486 than on my 856s (same linkage as 1066) and the 14 probably has about as many hours. The AC hasn"t worked on my 1486 in 15 years and it doesn"t bother me any. When its hot I take the doors off and its that much easier to get in and out and its still quieter than a 1066 with the doors shut. The 66s are great tractors, but I spent too many hours in one with a cab listening to it howl. So I recomend the 1086 if you are going to use it very much, even in the summer its nice to have the cab to keep the sun off of you.
