i got a 240 replaced the altenator and wired it from the alternator stright to the selenoid. it will jump start very easy but will not run on its' own does it have to have a battery to run. it does not have one now or why won't it run

No battery no run it has a distributor not a mag so it needs a battery to power the ignition system. Trying to run it straight off the alternator you have already burned out the alternator and your luck to have not hurt other things including your own self. An alternator with out a battery can put out well over 90 volts at over 35 amp which is more then needed to kill the average human

"over 90 volts at over 35 amp which is more then needed to kill the average human"

DERN RIGHT RICH, Heck it only takes something like 200 milliamps or less to kill the average human if I recall correctly. I think a GFCI trips out at something like 6 milliamps, but I dont have any specs handy.....

Take care my friend

As per my Navy A school we where told it takes only one millionth of an amp to kill a person and even a D cell flash light battery if hooked up right can kill but you have to get the current into the blood stream to do it. Also as per the same school the average human can take up to 32 volts before he feels any thing but that is under control conditions and all. Yep the human body if much more fragile then many believe it is

thanks that's an easy fix, i will get a battery and didn't know about the danger of an alternator

Few people do know about that and the bad thing few also believe it and think they can test the charging system by unhooking a battery cable when the machine is running and be ok. Well first off unhooking it can burn out the diodes in the alternator which in turn then puts out AC current and also tells the V.R. to put out max volts/amps and that is enough to kill which either way is not good since you can figure replacing it is $50 or so and well life is priceless

I was told the story of a swimmer in the Dead Sea,
returning to the motor boat.
He reached into the side of the boat and grabbed the first thing to help himself in-unfortunately
the first [and last] thing he grabbed was the battery terminal.
He had really low skin resistance, in the salty water.

Watch the charging system after you add the battery.

Like the other guys said, trying to run it without a battery could have ruined the alternator. If it's putting out 90 Volts, it will cook the battery, and possibly cause the battery to build pressure and explode.

IIRC the battery on a 240 is behind the seat. The only place worse than that to have it explode is between your legs like it is on a 544. Yowzers.

You're probably okay though. If the tractor wouldn't run without the jumper cables, the alternator wasn't doing anything yet.

Wrong... the battery IS in front of you under the dash.

not to cause a major dispute here or anything it was a common way of checking your charging system years ago when mechanics would regularly disconnect a batt cable to check to see if a charging system was working. if an alt/gen is not putting out the engine will die once the batt is disconnected.
the batts purpose is to crank an engine to get it started, once started an alt/gen takes over supplying juice for sparkies, lights and alittle left to charge the batt.
unless im missing something here i have never had an older car/truck/or tractor explode by taking a batt cable off.

True, and it was always a bad practice. It was even worse with the older cut-out systems that had no voltage control other than the battery.
