Green paint on M

Ive been stripping the paint off of my M (plain old 1950 m). Ive found this green paint under the red everywhere I've stripped so far including the radiator and under the rubber pads for the tank mounts. I dont believe its factory but someone spent some considerable time disassembling and prepping just to paint it green.

The green could've been factory. Legend has it that IH would paint the tractors whatever color you wanted by special order. If a large construction company's color was green for example, they might have ordered a fleet of Ms all painted green to match the rest of their equipment.

Was their red paint between the green and the tank mount pads too? That would mean it was disassembled twice for paint.

That looks like primer under the green paint, though... Maybe it was some overzealous John Deere fan painting it up as a joke. Do the wheels show any evidence of yellow paint? That would be a dead giveaway.

John deere bought a bunch of tractors from IH in 1950, painted them green and sold them as new and improved john deeres through there dealer net work. Due to demand for the tractors John Deers discontinued the program for finacial reasons.
Hey just making a joke. Don't pay any mind to my answer because I don't know.

I know at one time you could buy a green primer paint. I used it years ago. It covered and stuck good and the finish went over it good.

That's primer you're diggin' into.

I've seen 'em with grey, white, yellow dull red, rust brown, green, etc., etc.

the factory did not use primer. But yes it
[i:654c4848f0]could[/i:654c4848f0] have been painted green by special
order. Or somebody could have repainted green for
whatever reason. Or somebody may have used a green
primer coat. Without seeing the tractor in person I
would not be able to pass judgment. It's fairly
common to find the old F series and 10-20s with some
green. I don't know why.

I havent gotten to the wheel centers yet, it does have wider jd rims on the back but I put them on for 15.5 tires. Rubber tank mounts didnt look like they had red over the green so Im assuming it was sprayed with the tank on. I'll try to post a before pic.

That may not be TOO far from the truth. John Deere DID buy tractors from IH for testing and research purposes, and IH happily did paint them green

If your sure it's not primer on a repaint, it could have been a Forest Service tractor in a former life. Just a guess.

I've also seen a W9 that was purchased new by Burlington Northern Railroad, and it was painted BN green with no traces of IH red.

I have a 1931 regular that has dark green as its first coat of paint. I was told that the US forset service and some other goverment agentcies
had dark forest green tractors. oldiron29

ive got a '24 Model 20 industrial thats a green color. I bought it from the neice of the original owner and she furnished paperwork to prove it, so i have no idea why its painted that way since he was a private perosn and bought only one tractor
