Just a simple question. I started collecting ihc and mccormick wrenches to work on my f-12, a and bn. I want to do it like my grandfather did. I also have a collection hanging on the wall. I was wondering if any one likes to work on the tractor with the tools that came with them or that was used by the dealer on them?

Todd, I did find it easer to tighten the back bolt on the M carb with the old S wrench I have.

I agree. wife was upset i need a tool box full of the same tools for the farmalls. I also have all the monkey wrenches pat. 1897 just thought the. where cool.

i would not even want to think about using some of them useless things that they called wrenches. best leave them hang on the wall.

Well, I am putting together full sets of wrenches for each of my tractors. And yes, there are certain things that just work best with the original wrenches. One example is the magneto wrenches. also, the manifold wrench for the F-20 works slick. Last one would be the axle nut wrench for the F-30. Try to find a 3 3/8 hex offset, box end wrench OR a socket that big. Ain't happening, because I am still looking for an original F-30 one #14402-D.

i only use the ones that truley are useful such as the spanner wrench for an F-30/W-30 water pump, flywheel puller, manifold wrench, and wheel wrenchs. everything else is done with new stuff.

I did make a new flywheel nut wrench out of stainless and made it from a pattern of an original when i didnt have one of my own. i love that thing

I also think the old tools are cool ! I would like to get all the ones mentioned in the owners manual for my Regular. I have some for my H s and M. Those tools actually work for their intended job. Ever see the tool kits given with new motorcycles or snowmobiles? They are laughable and worthless . An old school wooden tool box to house them would be neat too.

I also went so far as getting about three tool boxes that was mounted on the horse drawn implements with the oil can holder to store the tools in. I agree with everyone that some impact tools are needed but to tighten some things, I don't mind get bloody using them. lol

Coolest old wrench I have is the old broken monkey wrench I found in the middle of the old pond, cleaning out mud. I just know what happened; Grandpa or Uncle Will or somebody was trying to tighten something up, in the middle of a job, the cast iron broke, he hauled off and slung the dern thing into the pond; "dangburnedest dern worthless son-of-a-....."
Got it sand-blasted, painted and hung on the peg-board.

I remember when I was growing up, That is all my Dad had for tools. We used what we had and made the best of it.
Today - I want newer tools that fit the job better.
All those old tools got hung on the shop wall and will stay there if I have anything to say about it.
