Discovered that my cold-runn8ing H did not have a thermostat. Installed the official CNH one, the gasket, new hoses, a little Permatex sealer, etc.
My question is, will this increase the pressure in the radiator system? Or will it run at the same pressure?

I think it would only increase the pressure when the thermostat is closed, if at all. I could be wrong. I put a thermostat in my H that had never had one and now it warms up in 5 minutes of running and stays in the happy zone thereafter. It will show too much heat if I have been running it hard in the summer on the haybine or baler and then shut it down immediately, so I try to let it idle for a minute or two first.

As the temp goes up so does the expansion of the coolant, creating more pressure. If you are concerned that it may cause a leak, you could drain some out to leave more room for expansion.

Pressure is regulated by the radiator cap. The thermostat is well worth any risk of additional leaking.

Just having a thermostat closed will not raise radiator pressure because the thermostat is on the discharge of the water pump, and subsequently the head.

As David G has said, coolant system pressure is controlled by the radiator cap. My H has a 5# cap on it currently. Now that being said, the higher the coolant temperature the higher the pressure the system will run at due to the expansion that Dave mentioned. The idea behind running a pressurized system is that it increases the boiling point of the coolant and therefore increases system cooling capacity. For every 1# of pressure your system runs you increase the boiling point of the coolant 3 degrees.

It will still run cool though, I had my H in a parade 2 weekends ago, I drove 4 miles to get to it in 5th geer and the needle barrel moved up. I"ve only ever got in into "run" range once while plowing in 60 degree weather.
