From a previous topic, I bought a C20 plow and trying to figure out the bottoms. I'm posting pictures. There is a moldboard, a share, and a seperate point. Trying to figure out if they are Plow Chief or Super Chief.

Plow Chief. It has the separate point. Super Chief does not have the separate spear point, just the one piece share. Some Plow Chief do have a two piece moldbord with the replaceable shin, which was good as that was a high wear point. There are people selling replacement points for the Plow Chief, but I don't know about the shares or moldbords.

The points and the shares on the Plow Chief wear out at the same time which is may be why IH went with the Super Chief which has no separate point. I have a C20 on which my dad replaced both plows with Super Chief's. The plow shares are one piece.

According to IH literature, the share is supposed to usually outlast 3 points. I've never found this to be true. 2 points to 1 share is about the best I've ever done, and by then, the share is worn to the frog.

IH also had some literature, in about 1953-55, that explained that the Plow Chief was a universal-style replacement for most conventional-style bottoms. The conventional style bottoms were falling out of favor because of a lack of good blacksmiths (according to IH). In the same literature, they mocked those companies who were using those new-fangled, flimsy throw-away shares, as they were thin, bent easily, and wore poorly, and weren't as economical as the other companies claimed. The Super Chief bottom was surely in development at this time. IH should have learned something about throw-away shares, especially with the propaganda they were spewing, but they didn't. They had serious problems with bending and breaking of the early Super Chief shares.

Put that thing in the ground and use it, that looks good! BTW the book shows those as Spear Points,I have seen a lot of them built up with a welder and used year after year.

Like others have said, they look like earlier Plow Chief bottoms without the replacable shin.

Plow Chief parts are getting very hard to find. The only thing easily sourcable are aftermarket points. The points are from China, not the greatest quality, not the greatest fit, and don't wear well. They certainly beat not having one at all, though.

There were weld-on replacement tips for the spearpoints available a long time ago. You can build them up yourself, too. You can lay a bead of hard-surface weld on the backside edge of the share, too.

Here's the point: http://www.agrisupply.com/product.asp?pn=18990&sid=&eid=

Looks like you have some decent iron to start with. Nice plow.
