I think it would originally have been equipped with a keyed ignition switch and a push button to engage the starter. If you "push/pull" switch is going bad, remove it and pay a visit to your local N.A.P.A. or other auto parts store.

Someone has replaced the key switch I think. We had two 706s and both had keys. In fact, all IH tractors from that series until at least the 1066s used the same key. Maybe some of the newer ones did too. Our 400 had a completely different key all together.

From the 450 series and up they should have the same Key. Now, I'm not trying to be a smart A$$, but the way I read your post, the engine is shutting down, which has nothing to do with the key switch/ push pull switch. Now, if only the electrical is going on and off, you may have the culprit. Dose it make a difference if you jiggle the switch? And- I once had gauge lights that I could not make work. Nothing made sense. Turns out, the multi-connecter behind the fuel tank and ahead of the steering column had corroded the connections. Took it apart, sprayed some battery terminal cleaner in there, waited a few minutes, blew it out, plugged it back together, and Viola! The gauge lights worked, and, Ignition power worked better, too. Less fussy on key position. Just a thought. -Andy

The only way that diesel should shut off is putting the throtle lever clear to the left.Unless you have a electric shut off selanoid on the diesel pump.Or what do you mean by shut down.
