574 power steering

I went thru all the archives back to 2003, could have missed one or two, but didn't find answer. I do not have power steering on my 574. All the other related functions seem to be working fine, i.e. brakes, three point, pto. Although I haven't had pto under a load yet. From what I could gather, seems like if the power steering wasn't working, neither should the brakes, but brakes work great. Not a hard steering tractor without it, but would like to know there aren't bigger issues. There is a repeating groaning noise under the seat when it has warmed up a little. Any direction appreciated.

Hi Kevin,
Some suggestion from Bernard le mécano who used to post on here.

Power Steering not working:

Hi, does the hitch work when the steering does not work? Maybe the oil strainer is full of dirt or ice. I've seen trouble like that once, the steering turns on one side, then don't on the other. When you turn the sterring on both sides, it has a small play to pull or push the cylinder valve. The end of the valve( thread end) has tendancy to wear and not open all the way. Put some drop of weld on the thead end and the trouble is fixed.

There is a priority valve to allow 3 gpm to the steering system. Below the hydraulic filter, there is a thick plug, the valve is in that hole. Remove the plug, remove the spring and maybe the valve is stuck all the way up or down. With a fine emery cloth, remove all scratches on the spool until it moves freely in the hole.

Fix for MCV Power Steering flow divider: there is a parts kit to replace the flow divider valve, in the MCV. It's a sleeve with a spool in it. It will fix your steering problem. Check with a CASE-IH dealer.

Brakes and hitch seem to work fine all the time and power steering doesn't seem to work at all. Thats why I'm thinking not in the priority valve, if I have read the earlier posts correctly. Do you still think I need the kit?

Hi Kevin,
Since the tractor steers by using the Danfoss steering valve hand pump in the steering column, I still suspect the hydraulic supply to the steering valve is low. Quick test if tractor has remote hydraulic outlets, with nothing connected to the remote outlets, pull the remote hydraulic lever while trying to turn the steering wheel, you should also hear the hydraulic relief valve buzzing. If the PS works then the priority valve is stuck. Sometimes the shock to the hydraulic system by pulling the remote lever frees the priority valve. The test would be to pressure test the PS hydraulic supply line, should be about 1500 psi. I believe PS hydraulic supply line comes out of bottom left of MCV valve.
Re PB, the PB requires only a small amount of hydraulic oil to work.

Hope this helps

I will give that a try( pulling the remote lever) and go from there. What does it mean if I don't hear the hydraulic relief valve buzzing?. Thanks for the help and I will report back my results.

Kevin,
pulling the remote, should causing a buzzing sound and pull the engine RPM down. If it doesn't buzz then either enough hytran fluid is getting to the hydraulic pump or the pump is weak but if the 3pt will pickup a heavy implement like a plow then the pump should be good.

I haven't had time to pull that plug, but did a quick check by pulling the remote and I had no rpm change and no buzzing. When I purchased the tractor, the hydraulic remote valve block was spraying out hydraulic fluid, I was told it was just an O ring and they "fixed" it. Now its dripping again, but not like it was. Didn't know if this info would help shed any light on the problem or if totally unrelated. Thought maybe it could be too much pressure or something along those lines.
