hey guys im a little stumped on how to get the radiator off of my h. i see that the steering rod goes through the top of the radiator and into the top of the steering box. that 1 3/8" hex retainer on the end of the worm gear is completely stripped and wont come off so im assuming thats the only way to remove the steering shaft in order to get the radiator off. Any suggestions? how do you guys remove your h radiators?
Thanks, Drew

That hex retainer is nothing more than a big pipe plug. If the hex shaped portion is too rounded over to use a conventional wrench, use a pipe wrench, BIG vise-grips, whatever it takes to get a grip on it and spin it out of there. Weld a big nut onto it if that's what it takes. Once you get it out, toss it in the trash and get a new one.

alrite thanks fellas, that helps. This is just the beginning of a nice overhaul and restoration. granted that im just a kid, i guarantee il have plenty more questions to ask. much appreciated Drew

i dont have one. im pretty much just in the tear down process right now but i know ill need one to put things back together lol. i think my local cih dealer has them. ohh and by the way its a 1941 h.

I hope you have better luck getting the bottom 2 rad bolts off than i did!

I couldn't reach, much less turn them. Ended up using sawzall to get them off.

Yep get that plug out anyway you can, but be aware that particular plug has to go back in; it holds the bearing in place. I finally took an abrasive blade to mine, and sawed two big wrench flats on it. and took a huge crescent wrench to it. Works.

Actually, the reverse is more the fact. Once you get something apart you just put them back as they were. There are a lot of things you need the manual for to disassemble. Get one before you damage and more things. Try aone of the IT manuals from the Farm Stores, or look online. Binderbooks has most everything.

You can take the front bolster off with the radiator and steering shaft if you are trying to get to the front of the motor. You remove the radiator hoses and bolster bolts. The bolster is VERY heavy so use a hoist.

On all the H's that I have ever messed with. Trying to get the radiator off was probably the worst think I have messed with. If you are having problems with the two bottom bolts getting them off. I took brake fluid to them, I mean soaked them completely. Then let them sit over nite then to heat to them then they came off pretty easy. Once you are putting it back together make sure you try to clean the threads up so that way it makes it easy to put them back on.
