New import H starter

Recieved mt 100% brand new starter the other day, put it on the tractor, click...thats it. I have nice newer heavy cables, cleaned and checked all connections.....click, no start. Took off the starter, put it on the bench, hit it with agood 6 volt battery and it spins good, held the drive with a channel lock and the starter did"nt put up a fight at all. Back on the tractor and nothing but a faint click. Battery shows 6.30 volts, same at the post on the starter switch where the neg cable hooks up, 6.30 volts, with the switch to starter cable disconnected, there is 6.30 volts when start button is pushed at the switch terminal, but when I hook the cable to the starter and push the start button, the voltage on the starter side of the switch drops to about 3.40 volts.Am I missing somthing here or do you think (I do) that I was sent a bad starter? The starter I took off came off my O-6 awhile back. I purchased this new one so I could return the loaner starter to the other tractor. It is too late in the day to get in touch with the vendor I purchased the starter from. For some reason, Im not looking forward to trying to return it, shipping ect, plus, the cheesy nut on the cable post kind of booger"ed the threads a little after tighening it several times...ugh

I get mine rebuilt locally. I have never had good luck with these prefabricated things you can buy. starters, gennys, radiators, etc

Get the old one rebuilt. For the money, you will have a better part when you are done.

I rebuild all of my old starters/generators/alternators .Get made fun of on the alternators because you can buy them so cheap, but I know what I got when I am done with them.

If you can hold the drive with a channel lock and it doesn't, like you say, put up a fight it is not going to spin that engine over for sure.

Did the box it came in looked damaged?
One good drop & the armatures inside could be compromised. Possibly the brushes.
I would attempt to return this "new" one, or ask what they would be willing to do for you, I am sure it wasn't cheap.

1. You could take it to a repair shop, perhaps they could fix it, maybe it's something very simple, problem is, once you put a wrench on it, it's yours.
2. Try to find a salvage replacement & have it rebuilt, as sugeested above. Most "vintage" starters are built a bit better that what you can buy now (short of a NOS one),

actually the box the starter was in did have a hole in the the drive end of the box where the nose cone may have have gone through? But that box was in a much larger box stuffed with packing peanuts that was in good condition. I'll have to wait till monday to call the vendor. We dont really have a local rebuilder that I know of in the area that can deal with stuff this old, there is a shop about 40 miles away that I have used before, I could probably scrounge up enough parts for a rebuildable core if I dig through my junk...maybe. Just a hassle though, was hoping to have this project done with.

I don't know who you bought the starter from, but you need to contact him. If the starter is truly defective, he should be able to arrange an exchange and the return shipping will cost you nothing.
