Been sitting here thinking. (I know, I know..)
But the M&W dipsticks on eBay are $150, and the pet-cocks are a pain. I've noticed there is a 1" x 1" rounded cast boss on the side of the block, above the petcocks, and even with the top of the frame rail. Could a person drill and tap that, and insert a home-made dipstick? Is there something important right there, something rotating? Would it work?
Anybody want to try it and let me know if it worked??

You could also make you a sight gauge by removing the petcocks all together and installing a clear tube where they were.It needs to be made WELL and a guard installed over it to keep from being knocked off.

More than one aftermarket company made them, also IH had a drill diagram to add a 300, 350 type tube and stick. Or you can make one. Recommend dropping the pan.

I dont see why it would not work.I been thinking of doing that to my Super M.Pan pulling is not nessary.Do this just before an oil ghange.Get engine warm, use a 'greased' drill bit,in stall dipstick ,drain oil.The shaveings that the 'greased' bit does not catch, the draining oil will get rid of.Anything remaining will be caqught by the oil filter.

I would never do it without removing the pan. That is ridiculous. It is WAY too easy to take those bolts out to prevent the future headache. The greased bit theory has been disproved because the grease plugs up the flighting of the drill bit causing it to not clear the chips. This could send as much or more stuff down into your hole.

The power unit engines did have a dipstick in that location.

Think I'llmount a 1/4" piece of iron in the vise and drill it and tap it and test this theory.
I can see how many pieces of steel fall through as I drill, and I can see how much falls thru when I tap it.
