Farmall 450 Ring gear

He guys, I ordered a new ring gear for my 450 and it came today. I am going to do my first split and attempt to put this in myself. I have several different manuals coming that I hope will help with the R&R. I'm just dying to know what holds this ring gear in place, there are no holes or key ways on this thing. I could wait for the manuals but they won't be here until Monday.
Thanks
Nate

Well the ring gears I have changed (on an A and C), they are just a shrink fit. When I put a clutch in my M, it appeared no different, but it was good, so I didn't change it. I don't know why your 450 would be any different. To remove, I took off the flywheel and clutch and put the flywheel on a steel workbench, and used a heating tip on the torch to heat that ring gear up to expand it. You'll have to get it HOT HOT to get it off. The new one is reverse, Just Heat it up and drop it on with some channel locks or such to grab it with. Clean the land that it rests on while you have the old one off, with a wire brush. DO NOT GREASE IT! By the way, I don't recall the manuals telling you how to change a ring gear, you just have to know. Manuals should help with everything else, though. Hope this helps. -Andy

might be a little quicker to get the old one off by just taking a cut off wheel in a die grinder and 'score' it in between the teeth (NOT all the way thru!) and then Smack it good with a sharp chisel. Will fall right apart.

Like previous post, clean the flywheel surface good before heating the new gear and dropping it on.DONT watse any time dropping the gear on and getting it FULLY seated once you get it hot!Once it cools off,it will be stuck on there for the next 50+ years! :)

I'll just score and break the old one off. I don't have a torch, could I heat the new one in a bed of coals? Does it need to be glowing red or is that too much.
Thanks
Nate

if you can get away with it, put it in your oven at 400 for about 5 minutes

that way it gets it nice and EVENLY heated

Not too hot, glowing red is 1300 degrees, way too hot. About 400 like previous poster said. Oven works good, small propane torch usually not so good unless you had a couple of them. I always have hammer and suitable flat iron handly if it does not drop all the way on right off the bat.

Yes,I failed to mention that.CHERRY red is incorrect.400 deg temp stick from a welding suplly house is good for less inexperienced installers. And it was really handy when me and dad BOTH had torches heating the gear evenly all the way around.

Oven is REAL good idea,(unless your shop is FAAAAR away from garage you are working in.:)

Your "bed of coals"idea will work. I wouldnt place the gear RIGHT on the coals.Maybe place it on top of a pizza pan?Keep your flywheel and gear CLEAN and no oil or grease!! And I would use a temp stick "marked" at points all away around the gear.If you done ALOT of them, over time, you probably wouldnt need to use a temp stick.(Would get a "feel" for what was good.)But this aint usually a job one does day to day. :)

Yes, if you don't have a torch, use your wifes oven. If you clean any oil off first, it shouldn't make a mess or stink.

NEVER use a torch to put one back on. (I do agree with Pete that the little propane torch can't wreck it) I took my MD flywheel in to get resurfaced while I had it off. They put my new ring gear on for free when I had it resurfaced.
