Tele-A-Depth Valves, 340. 460, 560

A few years ago, the late Hugh McKay said he swapped his troublesome and expensive tel-a-depth valve with a standard single/double valve from the 560 series. He said it worked fine and looked factory, but he lost 'depth control.' Does that mean it was either all the way up or all the way down? (He couldn't locate the expensive spider gears for the tele-a-depth valve in the 1970's, and their non-existant today.) Why wouldn't the double acting valve be able to stop movement of the cylinder in mid stroke?

You don't lose depth control, you lose teledepth control. With teledepth you move lever, hitch moves and stops moving when follow up linkage returns valve to neutral. With regular aux valve replacing teledepth valve you just control hitch same as you do any other hydaulic cyl by manually moving lever back to neutral when hitch is at depth you want. The 300 to 450's used a regular aux valve for hitch. They did incorporate a adjustable stop on the cyl but that is not a big deal. I personally prefer the regular valve over teledepth, less wearing parts and no hicoughs.

Thank you. That makes sense and seems easier than playing with the tele-a-depth adjustments constantly. Since I don't plow, the standard valve switch should work.

"since I don't plow..."

Plenty of farmers plowed many hundreds of thousands of acres with 350 and 450 tractors without teladepth. I don't see why you can't do the same with your tractor.

I will say that the only problem with the normal valve will be with a blade or something similar when you are trying to grade a road -- slightly more effort to keep the right depth. I prefer tel a depth, but it is not absolutely essential.
