Farmall H transmission

Just acquired a farmall H that the previous owner said would not go into gear. Tractor rolls freely with or without clutch depressed. Owner attributed it to some seal being out and loosing fluid. Anyone with experience in any similar problem want to take a shot at troubleshooting? I'd like to get some good info on where to start especially if there is something i don't know about that prevents a tear down. Thanks.

Have you attempted to put it in gear? Might be the clutch disc is stuck to the flywheel, thus the clutch will not release, and if the clutch will not release, you cannot get it into gear with the engine running.

Haven't gotten it running yet. Have noticed shifter seems hard to move and doesn't want to go into a gear. Owner said he got it into gear and drove it after the last buyer looked at it and it would not go into gear later on and he never tried it anymore. Can these things get stuck in 2 gears at once? I have heard of that before.

Yes, the end of the shift lever gets worn down, and then it is possible to get it in 2 gears at once, but if that was the situation you wouldn't be able to easily roll the tractor.

With regards though to the clutch I had a clutch stick on a JD one time and as long as tranny was in neutral or clutch was puched in this one would roll too. Just seems like this tractor will not shift. Gear shift lever is very stiff and does not want to move.

I had a Super H I was parting out that did that, it had been sitting out for years and water had gotten in and rusted the rails into the brackets they ride in, so the shifter couldn't move much.

It's actually fairly easy to pry out the little lead "Welsch" 0plugs on the ends of the shifter bar, that holds the shifter lever in, and then tap out the shifter bar sideways. The shifter lever will lift right out, and you can see if it's worn. The tab on the end should be 3/4" long fore-and-aft. All the dimensions are somewhere on this discussion forum.
You can also unbolt / remove the belt-drum-pulley, or it's delete plate, dirrectly in front of the gas tank support, and lift that off, and actually see inside the transmission. As I remember, (could be wrong) you can see the shifter forks move.

I don't know, I was taking this one apart anyway. You could also remove the fill plug and get some kind of little hose in there, maybe, to squirt oil with.
