Larry James 12-04-2011 09:15:38 174.124.140.26 Report to Moderator	Recently I purchased a farmall 450 which I know does not have the original engine. Is there someone out there who could help me identify the engine from the following information. Casting Codes : C248 (probably an M engine) Additonal numbers are : 6722DJ, 1-17-C. Anything can happen but have only saw blocks with with C248 cast on the block dated after M production ended. Do have some information they used C248 blocks after that with another serial # system but don't know what the block casting # was on them.   [Reply]  [No Email]

Strange, engine looks just like a late model M block except for the C248 on the side. After more thinking I can't remember seeing a 6722DJ block with a C date code before. I suspect its a replacement block from IH. Does it have a small plate behind the carburetor on the engine block? IH done some strange things with some replacement blocks so there's some possibility the bore could be 281 size. Maybe the 3645 was the original engine # that someone added back on. What is the tractor serial #? Also don't know how long after M production ended that C248 engines were used for other aplications. Have saw replacement blocks with C248 dated to after the middle sixties. If 1 17 C is the date code, cast in 57. This post was edited by D Slater at 12:30:09 12/04/11.   [Reply]  [No Email]

The engine runs excellent with 70 lbs oil pressue when warmed up. No oil leaks or strange noises. I think the engine has been gone through because it has all new gaskets throughout, head, oil pan, valve cover and side cover. This spring I will take it to County Line Implement N of Oconto, Wi. to have it put on the dyno to find out the hp. Just doesn't sound right to have a 39 m engine in a 450. thanks again for the information. Larry   [Reply]  [No Email]

If you want to put back to a 281 and can't find a 281 block you can put 281 sleeves and pistons in a 264 block.   [Reply]  [No Email]

Serial # points to being a '39 M block. 1-17-C is a casting date code, Apparantly January 17, 1939. I thought '39 was letter A, though.
