Okay, so I bought the 350 with a bad TA. I see rebuilt ones for about $600, parts to rebuild them, and sprag clutches to replace the rollers and ramp style.

I'm planning to use this tractor in my vegetable operation so a working TA would be very handy ( 1st gear on my H is a little too fast for some operations). What is the best way to go with rebuilding / replacing / repairing the TA ?

Is there a good tutorial on the use, care, and feeding of torque amplifiers ?

Thanks

Greg

It requires a double split to access the rear ramp and roller clutch and seals. The parts are heavy and you will need an overhead crane or cherry picker. Kevin Meier (who frequents here) and others sell Parts and rebuilds. The only one that has seen poor reviews here is called Mechanical Diode. Hi Capacity seems like a good choice. There is a video from this site that some use along with the repair manual. They are way easier than a auto trans. I would remove it and inspect the gears internally. Tooth wear, bearings on the shafts and thrust washers. If it is sound, I would just put in the wear parts, A new ramp and roller clutch, a new TA direct drive disk and possibly the Direct drive pressure plate. THe TA throwout bearing is a must replace item along with the seals to keep the Hytran inside.
Using it is the key to success. It needs to be changed from direct to TA as though the handle was almost too hot to touch. (jerk it back into TA) and released into direct the same way, as rapidly as possible) This allows the TA clutch to be used like a switch. It is never feathered into place. You will love it. Jim

First time I ever heard how you were actually supposed to use the lever...and I know you know what you're talking about Jim! Just wanted to add that when I was growing up, I worked for several farmers, mostly IH equipment. One farmer would tell you that " thats what the T/A is there for...use it" and the next one would cuss you out if you did use it because they were expensive to fix. Personally, I thought they were the cat's meow. ( I was also fond of the Oliver over/under too.)I worked for one of the bigger operations in northern Ohio back in high school and we ran stuff HARD....never remember any huge repairs. Used the T/A's all the time. And nothin's rougher on equipment than the hired hand! But they did the maintenance like it was supposed to be done too. Enjoy reading these posts...brings back memories.

I would suggest you buy a reman t/a instead of just the parts. I bought the parts and had a hy-capacity dealer put the t/a together it lasted about 20 min in the tractor and hy-capacity won"t stand behind it because they didn"t reman it. A local ih dealer had the same thing happen to them a while back so now they alway go with the reman units. I would also recommend putting in the heavy duty t/a as the cost difference isnt that much compared to tearing into the tractor again. Anyway just a couple thoughts for you and good luck with your project.

Grandpa used the T/A all the time. loved 'em actually. If he could plow faster by going up a gear and pulling the T/A he would. only problem he ever had was winter use. ran a couple T/A's out using them in the winter (Iowa). After he stopped using the T/A at 20 below, he never had trouble with them again.
