farmall 400 pump working hard in neutral???

i just installed a new (used) live hydraulic pump because mine went out. It seems to work great, but what is odd, is when I put all valves in neutral, i can hear that the tractor is working harder with the pump... i figure it must be deadheading. It makes some pretty bad noises, so I wont run it like this.

I assume there must be something in the system that allows the pump to flow fluid freely when no valves are in use.. can anyone tell me what that is, where it is, and what I should look for?

Pilot valve in the control block (see Parts diagram caseih.com. Or a valve that has its single or double acting switch (end of valves)is not fully turned, or is turned too far. The roll pin that stops the rotation is often broken. Jim

I agree it may also be a valve stuck between single and double acting; did you mess with those though?

If not, you may have an air pocket in the system that needs worked out. Easiest way it to take the air breather off the top of the reservoir and pressurize the system with a little shot of air from a rubber tipped blow gun. Only need like 15PSI and with the tractor running it will go ahead and push the air pocket out.

If that does not fix it, in the pressure regulator block, there is a small screen; it it about 2" long and the diameter of a pencil. If that is clogged, or collapsed upon itself, it will cause the symptoms you are having...

I think its the screen. I took it out this morning, and it was clogged and collapsed. Now, just need to find one... its $90 from IH!!!, and they don't have it.

Is the screen busted, if not, cut the end off screen and clean it out good, roll end back up. If it is stamped .024 I would drill it out to .031 like new orifices are. If screen is busted you, well, have to find a good one.
