what is your opinion I have the chance to buy either a m or 300 I want to use it to do a little plowing and plant 20 acres of corn next spring Iknow both are good but the 300 has a lot better features will it pull a 3-14 plow

I bought a 300 this past winter from a farmer that I knew. He said when the 450 was busy he plowed with the 300 and 3-16's that was used on the 450. My other farmer friend had one new in 1955 and he had 3-14's on it and said that was all it wanted. Mine is a very strong running 300. An M will do the same if moter is strong. The 300 if it has Power steering and fast hitch is a little nicer to operate, in my opinion. Ed

For plowing I think the M would do a better job.The M engine is almost 80 cubic inches bigger. The thing nice about the 300 is it has extra on it that the M does'nt have.

It's an M,and not a super M, correct?

If I could complain about something on an M, it'd be the gearing. 4th gear to me is just in the middle of nowhere useful.

It's too fast for plowing, or doing any other work, yet, too slow for getting somwhere quick. If you're not on a smooth road, 5th is too fast. But 4th really crawls.

I'm not 100% sure, but I believe the super M's are faster in 4th, and even faster on the 300. Hard to say by feel alone since I've only driven a 300 a couple times. Tractordata should have that info.

I'm partial to the M just "because" - but if I were stuck on a desert island and could only have one of those tractors to work with, I'd lean towards the 300.

IF however it's a super M you're considering, I'd lean back that way.

I've owned and put lots of hours on both tractors. I love the raw power the M delivers. i like the way it will chug up a hill in 5th gear. The 300 doesn't do eather of those things well. If the 300 has a working TA that would be a big plus for it. I would buy which ever tractor is in the best condition for the price.Keep us informed and show us some pics of both tractors. Kent

I would not consider putting a 300 on a 3-14, at least not west central ohio dirt. But, the 300 does have a TA which is handy at times and the hydraulics are probably better.

I own a 300 and wouldn't trade it for a new tractor for what I use it for.

It depends on where you're at as to wether it will do well with 3-14's. That is what it was sold to pull, though. I'm an M man myself- but I traded mine off for a 450D. The hundred series have nice features a letter series don't have. Like Optional power steering and fast hitch and live PTO. If the 300 has those options and is at similiar $, I'd lean towards the 300 for a "working" tractor, unless you just like M's. M is a great tractor, pulls 3-14's all day no problem, but steers kinda like a bear. I'll have one again, just because there were M's in my family. I guess what kinds of equipment are you looking to use? Live PTO is handier, TA is handier, hydraulics are a little nicer in the 300. You really are talking some of the greatest tractors IH made, It would be hard to go wrong with either. Condition and price should be your biggest concerns.

Will a 300 pull 3-14's? Yes, but maybe not.
I have pulled 3-14's with a warmed up Super H, which is comparable to the 300 in power & weight, but it was in good soil. Your soil may, or may not, be as good for plowing.

If your soil is heavy and sticky, you will want the M, if not maybe the 300 is enough. Live hydraulics, live PTO and the TA on the 300 make it very attractive.

I think I might end up with the m It has a heisler hand clutch 1 brand new tire and 1 like new tire and it is a 1939 model kinda always wanted an early one and the guy has a 3-14 ih plow for sale also
