I think the confusion comes from trying to compare two different numbering systems. IH parts suffix numbers with single digits, such as R3, are one piece parts. Parts with multiple digits in the suffix number are parts assemblies. As changes were made to the part the suffix number was increased. The newer number will work for the old number. Generally, in cases where the new part will work for the older one, but the older one may not work for the new one, the item was given a new part number.

The part number 312434R9X is an assembly number. That is the number you will find in the parts catalogs and it will include items such as expansion plugs, oil galley plugs, studs, and possibly bearings and seals. The number 278262RX is the one cast into the block and is the part number for the bare casting only. Since replacement blocks were never sold as bare castings you will not find that number in the parts system.

My 460D has had the block replaced with one from a 560D. The number cast into the block is 278262R4. I also have a spare block from a 706D that has casting number 278262R6

It will interchange, there are some subtle changes, later D236/282/301 had larger wrist pins, so that changed the rods, later cyl head had larger valves, gaskets for the 3 sizes all interchange, it was a gas truck engine converted to diesel.

i was under the impression that the 460 block not as tall due to the shorter stroke of the 460. 236 and 282 blocks have the same bore. now got me wondering. seems to me that in the 460 block wasnt the stroke the same as the bore?, making that a square engine.???

The wrist pin is located lower in the piston on a 236 as compared to a 282 so they use the same block.

The 236 is 3-11/16 X 3-11/16 for bore and stroke. The 282 is 3-11/16 X 4-25/64 bore and stroke. The 301 has the same stroke as the 282 but has a 3-13/16 bore.
