Fuel plumbing on H distillate engine

Just began restoration on 1943 H with distillate engine. Small fuel tank is in excellent condition, however the fuel plumbing has been removed. I want to replumb and use it as a "reserve tank" in case main tank runs dry.

What was the original fuel plumbing? Was there a "T" fitting between main tank and strainer bowl that small tank plumbed into (both tanks would route through strainer). Or did it "T" into fuel line downstream of main tank strainer?

Or something different altogether?

Anyone have a link to a photo?

Thanks in advance,

Ron

The small tank had it's own shutoff valve, not a sediment bowl, just a valve under it. From that valve, it was plumbed over to the main tanks sediment bowl, then both fuels ran out the same line to the carburetor. Looking from above, the inlet is at 3 o'clock, the outlet is at 12 o'clock.
Sorry, I don't have a photo.

OK, was there a different sediment bowl (two inlets)? The sediment bowl on the tractor now has 1/8" pipe threads and screws directly into the bottom of the main tank (no provision for a second fuel line to be plumbed in).

Thanks

The original sediment bowl screwed into the large tank and had a shut off. On the bowl base is a port for the small tank line and a port to carburetor.
If you go to 'caseih.com', search for parts, and plug in farmall h for a model, you will have the full parts catalog and a diagram of the fuel parts will be there.
Good luck

You will need get a distillate fuel strainer assembly.(Bates Corporation Bourbon,in.) (O.E.M. Tractor Parts Chenoa,Ill.) (Steiner Tractor Parts Lennon,Mi.) sell them and prices run $66.00-$79.00. There are also other place to get them . These are the ones I know of.

Here is a picture of what it all looks like. This from an AM parts book, but pretty much identical to Farmall H, except bigger. As already said, the parts are available. I bought mine from O.E.M and they fitted perfectly, though the pipe from the main tank to the carburetor was a bit tricky to fit. You need to thread it through one of the brackets near the front of the main tank. If you find you need to bend the new pipe then either you have bought the wrong pipe or you are fitting it incorrectly. Check the new pipe against the serial number of your machine. When fitting the strainer assembly under the main tank, ensure the outlet is pointing directly toward the front of the tractor and the inlet for the small tank directly out toward the near side of the tractor. Do NOT over-tighten the thread into the main tank, the strainer assembly is made of soft alloy and it breaks easily. Do NOT over-tighten the brass nuts or they will distort and/or damage the olives. This will cause the pipes to leak. By preference use the correct sized open ring (or C-ring) spanner. You need to ensure that the carburetor still has the brass strainer screen retainer fitted so that you can fit the pipe.

In the picture part numbers are:
10 Pipe, Fuel (Strainer to Carburetor)
11 Pipe, Fuel (Small Tank to Strainer)
14 Valve / Tap (Small Tank)
22 Strainer, Fuel

Just an FYI for everyone, when the Hs and Ms first came out, the sediment bowl was on the small starting tank, not the main tank. it was moved to the main tank because alot of them were getting ripped off by the belts used on the pulleys not being quite lined up and flying off the pulley.

I just got a small tank off of a H and the sedement bulb was on the small tank and the valve #14 in the post above was on the main tank. The pipe that went to the carb. went stright acrosse the tractor and made a 90 degree turn to the carb. This was a tractor that was bought new by the owners grandpa and is all original but just wore out and they are parting it out.

43 model used a shutoff valve on the small tank and line from it to srainer in the big tank. Some early ones were like John M said. Also there was a change from 1/4 pipe threads to 3/8 pipe threads in the tanks. 43 should be 3/8 pipe threads.

Probably a 39 or 40 model, don't find to many left intact like that. IH came out with a field change package to replace that type so a lot disapeared.

here is a picture of what I got. The oil filter was a tall one so yes I would say it was a 40 model. Also the transmission deck did not have the place for the seat cast in it like the 39 did. the serial number was also 40*** Also the distlate manifold was on it and the lever still moved but I couldn't get it because someone else had spoke for it.
