I have a farmall m with a bad 4th gear. The spline shaft is a little worn where the 4th gear rides. How much wear is acceptable. I can get a spare w6 rear end but not a m.Can i use the parts?
 
Can't remember all the serial # breaks without looking them up. But yes the w6 parts can be used. You need to use the w6 input shaft, 4&5 sliding gear 2&3 sliding gear and 3&4 double gear from the counter shaft and install in the M at the least. Some or all(can't remember) will change the 3rd or 4th speed in a M.
Or you can use all the W6 transmission gears in a M as a set. Some change 1st, reverse, 3rd or 4th speeds. Or you can put the w6 transmission housing with gears complete in a M. Ring and pinion will be different and speed up ground speeds.
Several ways parts can be swapped around between the two, if you post the serial # of both with what you would like to change I can probably tell you how to go about it.
 
I found a m rear end.It has some damage (shifter forks broke, constant gear on the top has some teeth missing) but the gears look good and i hope the spline shaft is o.k . He also has the w6 tractor less the motor , i need to split to see how everthing looks.You say i can use the whole rear end of the w6, housing, gears , axles and all . That sounds easier
 
You will need to install the M axles and axle housings to the w6 transmission housing, also brake and clutch pedals and associated parts.
Reason you can't install the just the W6 4&5 sliding gear and main shaft in a M is because of different gear ratios. Gears they mesh with have to be changed also. If you switch a M or W6 ring and pinion into the other tractor transmission use the rear bearing retainer for the main shaft that goes with the R&P set. Bearing retainers are different although at first glance they look the same.
