1206 injection pump problems

I went to install my injection pump after having it rebuilt, and while I was lining the shaft up with the idler gear and the key fell out. I have no idea where the key went. If I pull the pan will I be able to get up in there and find it? Any help would be appreciated.

The key goes in the front of the pump drive shaft, the gear 341525R1 is keyed & retained with a nut. The back of the shaft is what drives into the inj pump, has a flat tang.

What have you tried to get the retrieve the key. A small magnet might work. A rag stuffed in just the right place and turning engine correct way to work key back up. You would have to have the pump adaptor drive housing installed to do that to hold gear in place. I can't recall if the bottom of the front cover is open or closed by crank shaft gear to make key accesable with pan removed. May have to pull front cover.

If anyone ever has this happen. I used a really skinny magnet and bent it done beside the idler gear and was able to pull the magnet out, but when I went to put it back together it dropped out again and this time it hit the pan. I pull the pan and it was sitting right on top. Moral of the story, glue the key in before trying to put it in the idler gear.
