I am going to order a new range cover . Cant hardly get my 706 in reverse anymore . Gona order the parts that go with it also . Just wandering what parts are about always wore out and are there any that hardly are never in need of replacment . Dont mind buying everything if needed but if there is a part in there that dont get much wear why replace it . Would like to have what I need when I tear into it .

think you better tear into it first and make a list. biggest thing it will need is those little ball joints in the shifter linkages, and adjustment.if your not sure, get someone familiar with the unit to check it out.

I have changed the ball joints etc. on the outside and have had it apart a yr. or 2 ago to fix a broken shifter fork that made it better but did not fix it .

If you really want to fix it right, convert it to 56 series shifters.I did mine, and 3 more(two 706;one 1206) for neighbors.Salvege parts are available, and labor is 1/2 day or so.I can talk you through it if you decide.

Look at the shifter shaft and see if it has ware where it goes thru the top cover , next check the keyway in it . Look over the shifter cam and see how bad the detent slots are. Check the reverse shifter lever for loose pins and the shifter rod going down into the reverse shifter fork for a loose fitting key. No doubt that the cover is worn in the shifter lever hole and also the rev lever hole . Myself i have never bought a top cover as i had a machinist that would bore them out dead center of the holes and rebush them with a bushing and do it for forty bucks while i waited. Also replace all the headed pins and ya may need to take the shift lever off the tractor and have it rebushed also as i have had several that were plum slap wore out and had to redo the dash support also .

Thanks Delta . I have been ridin these old 06s most of my life and this is the first one I have had a problem with . Like the Vet always says they can be fixed . I have already rebushed the shifters , put in new pins and the little tie rods and anything I could do on the outside so I think I will keep going this way . I my be back in 6 months asking about the 56 shifters !!

When I fixed my 806 last year, I re-bushed the pivots in the cover. (did it myself, I'm a machinist by trade) I found the weld broke on the pivot shaft for reverse, got a new one of those, new rollers for all the cam deals, and smoothed out the burrs and such on my cams. They were just fine, just filed off a few burrs. New spring. Luckily I had an aftermarket parts guy who was familiar and ordered all the parts he thought I'd need, so when I tore it apart all I had to do was fix the cover and slap it back together. I also re-bushed both of my handels at the same time. That job made the tractor shift so much better. That and a little patience while shifting.

By the way, I had to fix mine after I wound up with the same problem- shifted well into a foreward range, couldn't hit reverse anymore. Bad news while in the middle of the road plowing Snow! :^) Good Luck! -Andy
