IH 620 Grain Drill

Anyone familiar with the 620 or 6200 grain drills?

There are no visible drive wheels in any of the pictures I've found.

Does it just roll around on the pack wheels all the time?

What makes the shafts turn?

I used to have a 620.. Used it a couple years, and it worked well for me..

If I recall correctly, it drove off of the rear "press wheels".. Can't recall now if there was one chain or 2.. Seems like just one, and it drove near the center of the drill.

Everyone says these drills are junk, but the guy who bought mine has planted roughly 1500 acres with it since I sold it, and his crops do just as good as the neighbors (who use much newer planters/drills)

If/when I start farming again, I'd like to find another, simply because they don't fetch much more than scrap price in my area.. And when you're poor, ya want the cheapest decent you can get..

Center set of press wheels has a chain that drives everything .
Good drill's , if you run many acres you have to repair a press wheel once in a while .

I have an old 'pressdrill'Yes it does roll on the press wheels as it has no 'transports'.There is a chain that drives off the presswheels similar to an 'endwheel' drill

I purchased an IH 100 press drill for 400.00 at auction took it home
and planted 40 acres. All I did was oil the chains. Good old drills.

Dad had a set of 2 12' 620s years ago.they were good drills,we had a back on transport for them to move from field to field. The newer models had their own factory trans. They were a double disk with packer wheels behind. We got a set a 150 hoe drills later on,they had better depth control.

Interesting info. They seem like real dogs on the market.

How do the press drills deal with stony soil? We've got LOTS of rocks, so many that if they're fist size or smaller, we leave 'em.

We had rocks at home too, they worked ok in them long as you don't try to set any land speed records.Pulled 24' with a 1066 hydro for years at 5-5.5 mph no problems....
