IH 140 plowing

Just plowed for the first time with my 140 Hi-Clear a couple Sundays ago. Pulled a 2-14 JD trip plow. A little slow, but had a blast. 5 yr old grandson had more fun than grandpa I think. Wasn"t long and he was doing the driving. He had a great time and I always enjoy our "Quality Time" together.

(quoted from post at 08:52:04 11/26/11) I am considering buying a 2 bottom plow for my 140.
Can anyone tell me if a farmall 140 can handle this equipment?

Plowing's more about traction than power.

The 140's got plenty of power to pull it - but front and rear wheel weights will allow you to use the power. Good tires goes without saying (so I'll say it anyways!)

The type of ground has a lot to do with this also. If you have light soil you will be OK. If you have heavy black soil or clay you may be in trouble. Wet ground(not muddy wet) is easier to plow as the moisture acts kinda like a lubricant.

Bought a 2 bottom fast hitch plow for my 140 thinking it was 2-12s but the measuring tape said it is 2-14s. Don't plow anything but the garden and 1/4 acre for sorghum cane so it works OK. I wouldn't want to plow the back forty in heavy sod though. It pulls it in second gear but runs short on traction at times. I think 1-16 would be a better fit in most ground. Joe

using one on my 100, works great, can pull it in 3rd gear most of the time. No problem with traction, my tires are NOT loaded, do have wheel weights.

Eric, you need to clatify.Does the disk have 2 'gangs' with 8 blades each,or 4 'gangs' with 4 blades each?A disk is measured in "feet",not # of "plates".Alse as "tandem";or single disk.

Ban, Where are you at , anh ???? With a Latiolais & a Dekeyser in the thread, I would guess in Sout Louisisna?

Yeh i guess i should have said it that way right first .Its a 5 ft tandem disc. It works great but they are not easy to find around here. And they are pricey. Usually around 4 to 5 hundred. I seen one sell for 750 at a sale a few years ago.

My 140 will pull 2-14s in second gear 8-10 inches deep without trouble. I have fairly sandy soil. In heavy clay, you may have to drop to first, but she should still pull it in second most of the time. By the way, I have loaded rear tires and one set of wheel weights all around. Have fun!
