IH 1066 problem

engine crankcase breather?? how much? having to add antifreeze? dipstick milky? been a while since oil change? maybe "cooking" moisture out of oil when brought up to operating temp. some amount of blowby is normal

On the 2 IH diesels that I have had expierience with over the years, a new 886 and a 706 with 5500+ hours on it, they both smoked the same amount out of the breather tubes. It makes you wonder, but never gave any problems, and the dealer always told us it was "normal" for these engines. Was worse in winter and under load.

Steam would be moisture from coolant leak into crankcase or condensation, where as smoke is just a by product of blow by past the rings. May be normal depending on amount of smoke. Coolant would not be normal and needs to be looked at.

After several days of not running, loosen the drain plug for oil, and just take it out enough to see if coolant comes out before oil. if so, the oil cooler could be leaking into the pan. If the oil comes out first, I would not worry much. The level of coolant is at least 2" below the bottom of the neck where the cap seats. It has no coolant recovery system, and must have space to expand. It does not need to be filled like a new car or truck. Jim

Catch some on a clean piece of cloth and smell it. If it's antifreeze it will have a nasty sweet odor, oil will just smell smoky. If tractor is not used much it may be slobbering. You need to work it hard for a couple of hours and recheck fluid levels.
