Serial # from engine casting info on Farmall M

I would like to get the correct serial # for my Farmall M. The engine casting is: 12-12-W and also on the engine is 6943-DJ Assuming this is the original engine, what is the year and serial # of this tractor. THANKS

It may have been built in 1951. Look on the left side of the clutch or tranny housing for a tag with the serial number. Will probably have six digits in it. Look for a flat machined surface on the engine block near No1 sparkplug near the fan end of the engine. It may have several coats of paint over it that need to be removed. Hal

Engine casting # 6943DJ is a replacement block and not original to the chassis. May not have a engine serial # on the block unless stamped by the installer. 12-12-W is a date code. Can you find any more that looks like that on the tractor maybe ending with another letter.

You're flat out of luck on ever finding the original serial number if the tag is missing, and the engine has been changed.

Front pedestal has the following:10-16-44 and in script, Belectronal (as best I can make out)
Casting on the belt pulley is 7-6-Y
One rear axle is 10-26-N and the other axle is 11-6-N Does that tell me anything? THANKS for all replies

10-16-44 means the front pedestal was cast Oct 16, 1944
10-26-N and 11-6-N were also cast in 1944
7-6-Y was cast in 1953, which tells you it was later added to the tractor.
And the engine cast code of 12-12-W means the engine was swapped out.

You have a 1944 M, with a newer '51 engine.
