How much smoke is too much?

My 400D smokes out the breather about like a cigarette burning. This is at 1/3 throttle just sitting there.

Is it normal to smoke like that? Under heavy work, it can be considerably more.

Yep, totally normal.

That's how the crankcase "breathes".

Have a Super MD, with a fresh rebuild overbore, head etc, still have
some degree of blow by, agree with Allan pretty normal for older
diesels

when it starts pushing oil up out of the dipstick tube, then it's time to worry..

aFTER IT PULLS HARD for 1 or2 hours it should clear up some to prity clear if it's any good in side. could be just water vapor in side from sitting with no work!!
