Using Quick Start IH 504

I have a 1966 IH 504 Diesel, thats runs good but with the cold weather arriving, it wont start unless I use some quick start. My question is, how much such I spray into the air cleaner top, above the hood. 1-2 seconds seems to work but it feels like its building cyl. pressure just before it spins very fast and fires.

I would never spray at the end of an air intake run, i would put a small tube or hole where it connects to the manifold as filling that entire intake pipe and filter canister is just making a giant bomb. i would also go get a coolant heater that installs in the lower radiator hose from tractor supply. that will help ALOT with cold starting

Does that engine not use glowplugs? I though they did; you should not need any ether if; 1.)The battery is in good shape, holds proper charge, and the battery leads are the correct gauge. 2)Compression is good and valves/pump are adjusted properly. 3)the glowplug system work even a little bit!

A block heater or hose heated really helps too, especially if you can plug it in overnight. I use a small frost plug mounted heater; it helps when it is below 0F.

The starter solenoid, if original, is a good place to look for amperage loss. They corrode and burn the contacts when LOW voltage is applied; always make sure the battery is charged, is what I am saying.

Best of luck!

If you are using the glow plugs, just remember that at least one intake valve is open part way at all times and you spraying starting fluid right at a red hot glow plug. You can blow the entire intake manifold and air cleaner right off that tractor. If you are not using the glow plugs, you should.

Make sure the glow plugs all work, good Battery, good starter, if the starter drags any it will slow it down. My 460 spins like it has no compression, only difference 6 Cyl your is a 4 cyl, and a block heater it will start anytime do not use starting fluid even with out the glow plugs it is very hard on that engine.

The answer to the question is, none.

"Quick start" and glow plugs is a baaaaaaaad combination.

If you haven't blown the tractor up yet, either you're very lucky, or your glow plugs don't work, or you haven't been using your glow plugs because you didn't know you had them.

Starting fluid + pre-cup, indirect injection injection engine = bad idea.

I have a Farmall 504 with the D-188 engine. ALL 4 glow plugs MUST work, 3 will not cut it. Strong battery is a must. Depending on temperture, it takes 20-90 seconds on the glow plugs to make it hit. Nature of the engine. I also have an inline block heater that when plugged in will keep the block about 140 degrees. I can start it at 20 degrees without glow plugs if the heater is plugged in.
