Super C - C123 compression when cold

I have a Super C that I originally had 30 lbs of compression across the board. I discovered bathroom caulk on the head gasket and a mess of stuff in the valve chambers causing them not to seat. I Cleaned all of that up and put on a new head gasket. I adjusted the valves to .017 cold and now I have 60lbs across the board. Oil in the cylinders does not increase the compression. I suspect the engine may now run but the compression seems low. Since I do not know the history of this engine and sleeves look very good and maybe new is there anything else you can think of or is 60lbs OK cold. It is below 30 degrees today also.

that"s pretty low. mine is around 145. i"d expect if you could spin it over fast enough, you might get it to run. prolly not well, but run.

If you have help and can do it safely, pull-start it, run it, work it warm it up and ONLY THEN worry about compression readings.

Run it awhile. change the oil. Silicone anywhere near oil passages is a BIG NO NO!. Pieces or spluge can break off and plug oil galleries and or the oil pump.

If you cleaned it up, and put a new head gasket on, run it awhile, change the oil and then take your compression. Quite possible it could stand a valve job, or minimally lap the valves.

Let us know how it goes.

If it will start, run it for several hours or for a total of several and get it warmed up well from load if possible. Then check compression. THe throttle must be wide open, the plugs out, and a fully charged battery to spin it fast enough to test accurately. It is also necessary to be sure your gauge is accurate, checking it with a known air supply or against a different gauge is important (unless you have a history with it and are comfortable with the readings) Jim

I should have said that when I had the head off I lapped the valves and they all looked good except one that was very slightly pitted. I have a 100 and I am able to test it at around 90 lbs so I know my guage is reletively close. It just seems like if it is rings that have not seated that oild would bring the compression up which it does not seem to. I am also thinking that .017 cold might be a little loose but good enough to start it. I will let you guys know how it goes unless anyone has anything else worth checking while I have it apart.
