Dipstick and oil pan petcocks

I just picked up this Mutt M. 1948 engine with 1941 rear castings. A buddy stopped by and told me that M's never had dipsticks. This has both, screw in dipstick and pan petcocks. I double checked the serial number on the motor and it is a 48 M engine. Is this an unusual add on or what. Thanks, Steve

Power unit engines had dipsticks.

Or, someone with an engine mill could bore the hole and add one.

from what I know, the dipstick was an aftermarket option. And yes, there is a boss on the crank case that can be drilled out to fit one. My 1942 H has one on the oil pan that replaced one of the petcocks. To the best of my knowledge, it was not a factory offering on the tractors. I don't have a clue about power units, so I agree with what has been posted on them.

Steve--make sure you aren't talking about the dipstick for the belly pump!! Two completely different oil systems!! Steve

I have put several dip sticks on Ms. Just drop the pan and where the boss is just drill at the correct angle and tap it with 1/4 inch pipe tap. Then you screw in a short pipe nipple and find a dip stick and you are set to go. To mark your stick just add the proper amount to get the oil to come out of the bottom petcock and then take a file and make a line on the stick. Add one more quart and make another line then add one more and it should be coming out the top petcock and add one more line. Job done. Can be done easy and at very little cost.
