Update, 966 hard to start

I checked the orifice fitting and seemed to be ok. I have a 1066 that starts real easy and compared a few things: When you pump the primer, on the hard starting one, it takes about 4 pumps before I hear fuel trickle in the tank. On the easy starting one, first pump and fuel is trickling. Seems like a little more resistance in the easy starting one to pump also. It acts like its not getting enough fuel for 20-30 seconds or its air in the system. This is very nerve racking as I just cant figure out what the deal is...

when you say hard to start- every time? only after sitting? i assume "hard to start" means it takes a lot of cranking before it starts. when cranking, is there smoke? is the cranking speed up where it needs to be? does it sputter for a while, or just at some point decide it"s the time and pop right off? any easier to start warm than cold? you mentioned the priming pump- does it make any difference if you first pump on that till you get fuel all the way through, then go try to start it?

If the tractor sits for a day, its hard to start. There is thick grey smoke when trying to start. Takes about 30-40 seconds of cranking, turns over plenty fast. When it finally starts, it takes about 20 seconds of sputtering before it runs smoothly and really belches out the grey smoke. As it gets colder, it is a little harder to start. I did try priming the system before starting and it doesn't help one bit. I also checked the timing today, 18° BTC right on the nose.

You don't say if there are any leaks, not flowing but, just damp or wetness at any fittings or gaskets. You also don't say when the filters were last changed . How cold is it? Though I would expect it to start good down to zero without ether or block heaters on if the engine is not worn out.
Have you tried a compression test? It sounds like you either have low fuel pressure or low compression both will give gray smoke upon cold start. For batteries you need at least a thousand cca or more if it is cold say below 20 degrees out.
