Farmall M Engine Oil Recommendation

I have a Farmall "M" with a good running engine. I don't know much about the history of the tractor but it has plenty of power and doesn't use any oil to speak of. Can I use the same Shell Rotella T 15W40 oil in it that I use in my diesel pickup, or do you recommend something a little thinner. I have had the pan off and the inside of the engine was very clean and looks like it has been torn into before, so may even have a Super M kit in it, as it has a lot of power for an "M". Thanks for any response.

15W40 is fine. Any good oil in the 10W30 up to 15W40 is fine. I run straight HD30 in mine, however, that is a preference, not a requirement. I run HD20 in the winter for the ones I use on a regular basis.

be careful, oil and spark plugs are a religion around these parts! LOL!

I run Valvoline SAE 30 + the Zinc additive, but from what I have studied it it probably overkill.I have heard several poeple from ALL of the forums on here using the Rotella 15W40 in ALL of their equipment(trucks/tractors gas OR diesel.)

In my personal opinion,THE BIGGEST problem with oil/fluids is NOT so much of the formulation. It is the fact that alot of poeple NEVER change it enough like they should.I know the stuff is like $4.00+ a quart, but how much does a destroyed, pre maturely worn out engine cost ?????

Mike, you nailed it. Brand and multi-vis or single vis don't mean a hoot if you don't change it on time, and keep the level right.

K-mart oil is better in frequent oil changes, that Mobil1 syn that is NEVER changed.

You can take that one to the bank......what's that old commercial tag line: "you can pay me now, or pay me later........"

Thanks Tom,

ANOTHER thing I "harp" on:In the rising cost of petrolium products, grease is STILL cheap !!!!!! A tube of the BEST grease I buy is STILL under$4.00 a tube !!!!!

Whether you are changing oil,or greasing the tie rod ends on your factory wide front end,you are constantly pushing out the contaminants, you are removing dirt/dust/metal/rust/ect from the component.Things that are abrasive to your tractor!

I didnt even bat an eye buying 15 gallons of 90 wt for the gear box on my Super M.It needed to be done !

Keep your fluids good !!!! :)

The 15-40 will work great. I use that in the tractors and the one ton and the car that gets me to work. It's has more than enough zinc for the sliding parts to stay happy.

I usually get whatever I can find at a good price,
usually Rotella or Delo or Traveller.

The Turbo Diesel Registry tested a bunch of 14-40 diesel oil not too long ago, all the way from Wal Mart brand to the Cummins recommended Valvoline fancy stuff. Turned out to not be much difference between them, in fact the Wal Mart oil did pretty good! The specs for that type of oil are such that there's not much room for variation and it still get the CI-4 label.
