F 12 oil pressure

Started the F 12 today and the oil pressure was about 2/3 in
the red. It usually is just above the red band in the white.
What could cause this quick drop? Oil quantity is ok. Thanks
Craig

Where to start? How bout easy...try a new filter and while you have it off inside the oil filter base on the bottom is a large brass plug with a screw driver slot in it. Carefully remove that plug, it has a spring and check ball under it. Make sure it is clean, smooth, and shiny and its seat is clean. Next I would try a different oil pressure gauge. Then remove the valve cover and check the center support to see that is not cracked or dumping your pressure on the top end. Next is the check ball and spring in the pump.... requires removal of the oil pan and disassembly of the pump. If you gotta go there you may as well remove the pump and check it for wear, if the gears are shot it will need some repair or replaced with a good used one. Or any one or all of your bearings (rods, mains, or cam) are shot and one of them let go dumping the oil pressure. Disassembly and checking bearing clearances with plastiguage would be next.

Check the archives for the responses I got for a similar question re my W-12 (Identical Engine). They ranged from 10 PSI per 1,000 rpm to "If the gauge moves, you're ok."

Basically, these old, slow engines do not need much pressure for normal use.

Thanks for your replies, I like easy first, the old tractor doesn't get much use just hauling the grand children. craig

While I agree that low pressures are OK on the F20 and 30, the F12 has plain bearings in it and is full pressure lubed not splashed. If the pressure is not enough to maintain the oil film on the bearings you got problems. Most of the replacement gages sold today are for the 12/14 and barely read any pressure when installed on a 20 or 30.

36F30 is spot on. These are pressurized mains and rods in these old girls. Oil pressure is especially important. I would absolutely do the guage first, then move to the next item.
