Convert A to Super A

What am I thinking? Oh, well.

Is the Farmall A designed in such a way that all one has to do is set a hydraulic box on it, run the hdy lines, then voila, it's a Super A?

Bottom line is that I have a scrap Super A - that is scrap because the motor is busted beyond repair and the front-end is busted. (Guessing that someone wrecked it or dropped the front-end-hard.)

I can purchase an A that appears okay. Can they be merged into a true Super A?

What am I missing in the thought process?

"all one has to do is set a hydraulic box on it,"

WHERE are you going to "set" the box, as the "A" torque tube/mainframe has NO machined/drilled/tapped mounting area for the touch control unit?

The A engine (almost certainlyy will not have the machined flat for the hydraulic pump. Very late engines might have) , any 123 from a Super C super A ,100 series and 200 series will have it. The front bolster should be used from any off set tractor(I think). Sheetmetal must be from a Super or later to accomodate the hydraulic reservoir and radiator height. Jim

Thanks for all the responses. Didn't think the A engine would work on the Super A, but had to ask.

What got me to a-thinkin' was that the A has some sort of after-market hydraulics. Been a while since I looked at it, thus don't know the setup.

You can take the torque tube from the SA, plus the hyd resevoir, pipes and the touch control levers and rods, etc, along with the pump if it is still functional. But you will need another SA or C engine to add the hyd pump. The SC engine will also work, but you need a SA or C radiator for the sheetmetal to fit if you don't have one.

The A has an aftermarket/homemade hydraulic pump on it?

Is it on the engine, run by a V-belt?

If so, you can power the Super A's hydraulic block with the aftermarket pump.

The A's front end and the Super A's rear end will bolt right together at the bell housing. That will give you the hydraulic block (aka touch control).

All that's left at that point is to connect the hydraulic pump to the touch control.

There is a hydraulic manifold and lines that run from the pump on the Super A's engine to the touch control. You will need to take that manifold, cut the lines short, and have threaded hydraulic fittings welded or brazed on. Connect the pump to the manifold with hoses.
