Just bought a 53 Cub with an unusual problem. a half-a** attempt at restoring i believe. when you push the clutch more than halfway down it rattles like it wants to blow up. they had welded a short, maybe an inch, bolt between the clutch arm and the strike plate to keep it from going all the way. i removed the bolt and discovered the problem. any ideas?? wondered if maybe clutch components were installed backwards.....

It's not possible to install the parts backwards. The fingers were probably not adjusted, or the pedal free play afterwards, or the throwout bearing graphite has disintegrated. The rattling is the throwout bearing carrier (metal) hitting the pressure plate (metal). Serious damage will occur if you continue to do this. Look up into the inspection hole and have a look at the throwout bearing and the fingers. The graphite should protrude past the carrier 1/4" or so. All the fingers should be adjusted to the same level, 1 1/4" from the plate, and the pedal free play should be 1".

You need to split the tractor to find out the problem as other post says the linkage is hitting the pressure plates fingers there is something wrong and only way to find it is splitting.
