Recently noticed more leaking than normal. Pulled the wheel and seal cover off and saw the bearing was shot. Eight balls missing. Pulled out the bearing cannot find the balls in the axle housing. Is it possible for them to get into the rear? Don"t want to split the rear main casting. Ran a magnet in the axle housing and the rear and could not find.

I had a simular siuation with one of my 400s. It is why I still have a spare rear main housing sitting in the barn.

If one of those balls gets jammed between the bull gear and the housing, the housing will break. Many have been broken and most of them have been repaired. Not pretty and they might seep a little oil too.

Yes there is a hole in the axle housing that joins a hole in the transmission. Balls could come out between bull gear and transmission inner wall and go to bottom or be stuck between the axle housing and the outer transmission wall. I would at least pull the pto and see if I could find the balls or pieces, if not found pull the axle housing. If tractor was used with the balls all missing you better check the inside axle bearing anyway.

With eight balls missing there weren't very many left. If you can account for all the retainers so you can get an acurate count you should be ok. But, if not, you better look at an identical bearing and actually count the balls. I used to have a chart I made for all the ball counts of those bearings as they really got tore up and you can't tell if you have them all. Remember, a bearing with an A or B on the end may well have more or less balls than one with same number but not that A or B.

I would take the time to make sure they aren't in there somewhere. Time well spent. Beats a broken casting anyday. Just my 2 cents.
