I have been looking at tire and tube prices.. YOZWERS..

cheapest I can get are carlisle and they will be 90$ each shipped, plus 40$ for good tubes.. not ready to spend that much right now.

Are there any trailer tires that will fit? local dealer has 4.8-15 trailer tires ( like for boat trailer..e tc.. ) has used / take offs too.

will those fit?

I guess I could also look for another set of those t125 70 d15 maypops.. I know those fit.

ideas?

don't mind putting new rubber on her.. but the cost of them tires will more than double what I got into her :)

I don't know what size tires and what tractor you are putting them on. Trailer tires are not a good option. The automotive type tread sill not steer as good as a tractor tire and they definitely won't look right.

I had a tire guy tell me a month ago that tire prices had jumped considerably in September. He told me a percentage but I can't remember it. It sounds like the days of getting good radials for $60.00 to $70.00 are over......at least until we unelect our current president. Sorry, this only indirectly pertains to the subject but the point is, yea, don't be surprised by todays tire prices.

Bet your reconsidering replacing the "maypops"?

P.S. Soundguy, your "C" looks fantastic. I always enjoy your posts, progress, and projects. I learn alot from you and everybody else on this forum. Thanks.

Yes, new tires are expensive. Hence it is next to impossible to find any used 14" or 15" tires in this part of the country. If you want anything used you just about have to camp out at the tire shops till they get some used ones. I got a pair of used 15" for trailer last summer, and it was the only pair they had, and they had just taken them off about 15 minutes before I got there. This shop was a large dealer and sells a lot of tires in a days time.

I hear that Goodyear just closed the last tire plant they had in the US, wonder if that's why the prices just jumped?

I usually take the 3 rib 16" tires off my WD45 when handeling the big round bales in the fall, and replace them with wide 16" truck tires till the ground gets firmed up in the spring. Those front tires sure can cut ruts when you have a load on your loader bucket!

the trailer dealer in our area has some 4.8-15

he has used , new and take off.

the take off are when he gets a load of trialers come in staked, he takes the tires off the one that they came in on, and retires it./ new tires with a lil wear from running with other trailers on it from the manufacturer.

can get them like 15$ each.. plus 20$ each for tubes..

that's 70$ total.. installed price if I buy the tubes from him.. etc..

them ebay ones are looking ok.. but still over 150$ shipped..

i've had a couple people tell me it looks ugly with the maypops on it.. but.. at the prices I just say.. I think it's going to get used trailer tires.. or used maypop / p series 125-70-15 car tires on it..

i bought some tires a year ago.. and wow.. prices hace went up!!!

i was looking at 5-15, and the tractor is a farmall C

Go to an auto salvage yard and get a pair of compact spare tires. I got a pair of 15 inch ones to use the rims on my Super C. I had to remove the centers and add the locating stop and they fit right on. I reused my old tires but I only paid $5.00 each for the wheel and tire. A lot of times the spares have never been out of the trunk so they are not weathered.

looks like 153 shipped or so.

better than what I saw.. but still steeper than I expected. more than a few years ago anyway :)

thanks for hte link, I saved it. if the used ones don't come thru.. that's a backup

I bought a set of 5.00 - 15 for my C, but it has been roughly two years ago.....I paid roughly $50 each from a local farm supply type store. I can also say that quality certainly has not gone up, as anything will go through these. Went out today and had one front flat on my 8N, and both fronts flat on my C. Never had much problem until I put these on, and I replaced with same type tire on both those tractors, now I get at least one flat on the front every time I use it. I am going to look into some tire liners to see if that will help.

I got lucky. I bought 2, 6.00-16, 8 ply tires and one tube for $168. I think the dealer said they are from India. Another dealer had two Firestones for that price but they were 6 ply.

Goodyear no longer makes industral tires,Titan now makes tractor tires for Goodyear and they will have the Goodyear name on them or you can get the Titan brand, same tire.

Maybe, just maybe, check a TSC near you. I lucked up and got one a couple of years ago, that hadnt been hit by the price increase. I think I paid like $45 bucks for the tire. A week later it was $75.

Not to mention if you have an account with them they mail you 10% off coupons all the time. Most of the time they are only good for purchases of $100 or more, but that isn't hard when buying two tires.

Boy, I think I would just bite the bullet and get the right tires.

Yeah you can get car tires for less but if you have them put on and don't like them you will end up putting the right ones on and be out the cost of the car tires.

What does a hundred bucks get you these days anyway?

I haven't priced tractor or implement tires, but I bought a set of Michelins for my wife's Continental in about '07 and they were about $125 each at that time. Bought a set of P235R17s for the LS she has now, just 2 weeks ago. Michelins were $225 each, so I bought Kumhos for $140 installed... this is through the car dealer I work part time for, so got a decent price on them. We have had good success with Kumhos at the dealership. They're quieter and smoother riding than the original Michelins it had on it.

Tractor Supply 5.50 x 16 $109.00 ea for just the tire.

I got Deestone's for mine 6.50 x 16 $85.00 ea for just the tire.
My local dealer order them, only problem, made in Malaysia.

The cheapest out there are "Buffed" tires from Tire Town,
not good for a "show" tractor but just fine for a working one.
http://www.tiretown.com/front.htm
They have used ones also, but by the time you figure in the freight you are back up to new local tire prices almost.

not like them? not sure what you mean.

rubber is just there to roll on the ground.

100$ is 100$

that's a monthly tv and telephone bill +

or 90% of an electric bill

7 months worth of garbage service

half a car insurance payment

grocery bill for the wife and I..

(quoted from post at 06:43:57 11/14/11) not like them? not sure what you mean.

Well, let's see....

1. You might not like the way they look. Car tires just make a tractor look "junky." If the tractor is all painted up nice, it looks like a pig wearing lipstick with old bald car tires on the front.

2. You might not like the way they take a load. Car tires are not designed to handle heavy loads like tractor tires. Tractor tires have a stiffer sidewall, and can handle 50-60 PSI. Car tires max out at 44PSI. Even if you pump the car tire up to 50-60, it still squats under a load.

3. You might not like the way they handle. The ribs on a tractor tire serve a purpose: When you turn the steering wheel the tractor turns. Smooth car tires will just slide sideways in field conditions.

lets see..

look....

hmm.. it's a tractor.. not a parade queen
tires are tires. a non checked small car tire is gonna 'look' better than a ragged checked tractor tire.
I'm a bit perplexed with the pig/lipstick/junky comment.

I'll asusme you are one of those sphinter police/retentive types that only cares for a 100000% original tractor and count off points when you see things that are not exactly like it was in 48. I'll keep that in mind while thinking about the rest of the comments :(

take a load

Hmm.. my heaviest loader tractor i HAD to put car radials on for the loads it was carrying... ribbed tires were leaking deep ruts inmy pasture when carrying 2000# hay bales.. car tires fixed that.

PS.. the 'car tires' my C current has on them are RATED for 60 psi, and that's what I have in them.. one of them anyway..

plus, I'm not sure what load you may think there is on the front of my C.. it's probbaly got the lightest front of any of my tractors ??

steering?

covered above. narrow profile provided more steering vs wide and flat. usually there is a trade off for naor profile vs weight distribution of a wider flatter tire.. thus you can go for extreme weight or for responsive steering. since this is a lil minscule tractor with a 15" rim holding something like a 4 x or 5x tire.. it's a small profiel no matter what.. should turn fine.

soundguy

Guys,

Might want to check the owners' manual for recommended tire pressures before putting 60 psi in them. The rims were not designed or rated for that much and are likely to split at some point.
